    Belly of Fire

    How much farther?

My son stumbles as we wander through the wilds, pressing harshly through unearthed roots and tendril-like vines reaching down from the canopies. It is as if they mean to thwart our advance.

Keep up, boy. I can smell it.

There was a beast alone in the brush, and the boy drew his bow ready for the kill. However, there was a terrible scorching dismay gleaming in his eyes, not unlike myself when I first took a life, but...

Please, can we stop for a bit?

    You can manage.

Like fire from the gods, the clouds above the treetops parted as it rained down. The sight was magnificent, and once the fire hit the Veil, a loud, soaring wind boomed through the brush. The beast got away.

I do smell it ... smoke!

Good, then we must be nearly there. With each creature scared as vermin on a sinking ship, I figured this was a better use of our time. Maybe it is from the gods. Maybe it beckoned to us.

Investigation is necessary at this point, so I place a firm grip on my blade and pull it from the scabbard at my side. Quietly, I push through swaying branches, my senses on edge, but to my surprise, nothing.

The stone lies within a patch of charred grass and uplifted sediment. Gradually, I inch closer. Having it within arm's length, I tap it a few times with my steel. For a few seconds, there is no reaction, but I am amazed to find a rumble from deep within as the rock shakes within its veiled bed.

Take care, boy. Something is amiss.

    Be careful, Father.

    Don't wor ...

Before I can finish that sentence, a shrill screech echoes through my ears as the rock cracks in two, releasing some beast that lunges through the air. I've barely enough time to evade the bolting phantom, but with its prey out of reach, it continues flying toward the bushes behind me.

Before I can do anything to save him, a single arrow streaks past my eyes, planting its catch into the bark of a nearby tree. My son comes out from hiding, being
