Part One
The rolling hills outside the window of the royal coach passed uneventfully as the caravan rode on toward the Parvimyhr notch. The road, although well traveled, was not smooth. The coach’s passengers, Queen Titania and her handmaiden Isendra, bounced along toward their destination on the far side of the Western mountains of Avalon. Fortunately, a gentle rain had fallen the night before and kept the road dust to a minimum.
This is intolerable, your Majesty.
It is merely the price we pay for having a broad domain,
the Queen said demurely. However, I do believe I will need to discuss improvements when next I speak with my husband.
Most grateful, ma’am.
The handmaiden tried to return to her cross stitch and managed merely to skewer her pale finger with the carved ivory needle. A tiny drop of blood marred the carefully ordered stitching and she set it aside with a huff.
We’ll be stopping to rest the horses soon, Ise. I think we’ll take a little walk and get some air.
Yes, your majesty.
The young raven haired elf looked out the window, and then back to her mistress. She admired the Queen’s strength and composure. It only made sense though that the Queen would be a sturdy woman and unflappable. Titania, who gazed out the window herself, was a Huldra; a type of rare Troll famed for their beauty and nearly indistinguishable from an Elven woman save the cow’s tail that emerged from the base of her spine. She had been raised in the forests, where the hills they were passing through, met the western mountains. Huldra lived in small nomadic bands that ranged from the northern tip of the range all the way to the coast to the far south and generally lived peaceably off the land.
When the unification forces swept through the foothills following the sealing of Khadagar, many of the young Huldra, resentful of the army’s rampant destruction, rose in rebellion. Encouraged by the more savage trolls from the northern plains, the Huldra did not submit to rule by elves easily. Several battles were fought amidst the previously peaceful forests Titania had called home. Beaten and broken, the trolls finally surrendered. As part of the treaty the daughter of the high chief of the Huldra was given to the conquering elf lord, Oberon, as his bride.
