      Maddoc stood outside the door for a moment, listening like a curious slave. He was uncertain as to why they were here and even more uncertain as to how he felt about their presence.

      Oh, the two soldiers were little more than an inconvenience, unexpected guests come in the night.

      Well, this was something new, quite new in their long association.

      Then it came to Maddoc that she was a soldier as well. He had put it out of his mind with particular care on her other visits. He had not wanted to deal with the thoughts of what she would go back to when she left his house.
