    Preface

The concept for this dissertation has been in my mind, with greater or lesser intensity, for many years.

It is only recently that a form of focus has come to me. This Christmas season the world's approach, including the approach of believers, to the celebration of Christ's birth, struck me as particularly onerous. The almost universal worship of Santa Clause (a derivation of Saint Nicholas), along with the increasing abhorrence of even mentioning the name of Christ, has set my mind to churning and burning. The name of this book, Satan's Claws, is a purposeful selection as a counter to our fixation on Santa Clause.

During my days as a desert dweller (The Marine Corps was kind enough to station me at Twenty nine Palms, CA for seven and a half years)I became overly-familiar with a plant affectionately called wait-a-minute bush or cat's claw. Its thorns, which are many, are shaped like the claws of a cat and are just as sharp. It matters not how experienced you are in the ways of the desert, every day out there you will wait-a-minute while you untangle your sweater, jacket, shirt, or skin from the cat's claws.

The Scriptures are filled with the effects on us humans by Satan's claws. My own life experiences seem to be, frequently, in direct conflict with what would have me do.

Always subtle, always seemingly insignificant, always appealing, always deadly, always regretted, and, yes, always avoidable with God's help and guidance.

This book is an attempt to renew the use of Scripture, my personal experiences, my perceptions, my struggles, and some excerpts from commentaries, writings and sermons from past and present pastors and teachers. And, yes, some guidelines for overcoming Satan's wiles and methods.

May God help me in this effort, and, perhaps, help others in their understanding of the ways of Satan, our mortal enemy, and develop ways to defeat him.

If you think that you will ever be free of Satan's claws in this life you are in for tremendous disappointment. This is a lifelong war. As soon as you think you have done away with one known sin, another will bother you (and when/if you are struggling with it, the conquered sin is alive-and-well and active again.)

    Introduction

Some years ago, while feeling particularly morose about my inability to live a truly Christian life, I purposefully examined the lives of each of the saints listed in the 'Hall of Faith' in Hebrews, the eleventh chapter. How did they get there? What a bunch of sinners! Well, it turns out, they got there by their faith, given to them by God, and their acting on that faith.

At first I found it comforting to know their sinfulness, but then I realized they did something about it. I also realized that the same opportunity had been given to me.

As I approach this project, I acknowledge the many forces that have shaped, and still shape, my thinking and living. First, the Scriptures which have been, and continue to be, the anchor of my beliefs. Frequently twisted, tortured, added-to through suppositions and wished-for effects, watered down, excused or explained away, yet they remain true, solid, understandable, and eternal.

Second, my formative years including my home life, my schooling at Wheaton, personal study, and resolving life-questions by way of Biblical principles.

Third, through the writings and sermons of men such as J. I. Packer, A. W. Pink, Jonathan Edwards, John Owen, John Bunyan, John Newton, C. H. Spurgeon, Oswald Chambers, C. S. Lewis, and the likes. Oh, how much we can learn from old dead men!

Looking back on my life, I find I continually had reason to challenge, not to overthrow, many of the things of faith I had been taught, and had accepted at that time. Actual life experiences raised problems for me that I had not expected. Studying Scripture, reading books by Christian authors,(I never have seen a book that was a Christian, a 'Christian book'), and conversations with Godly men always helped me in my understanding of the difficult passages. I became a Berean Beaver for the Bible.

I discovered that, in resolving my questions, my faith came together very closely to the faith that had been given to me—but now it was MY faith. That made a significant difference.

In this book I go through Scripture, starting In the beginning, and progressing somewhat sequentially, showing that the serpent was, and still is, more crafty than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. Gen. 3:1 (NAS)

I follow a sequence of individuals, situations, and societal groups, referred to in Scripture, who represent those ensnared by Satan's Claws.

Throughout this book, I see myself impaled on those same claws as the characters I have been studying. I wish it were otherwise, but I pray that God will use my propensity toward sinning as a key to unlock a deeper understanding of His Faithfulness.

As this book deals with the acts of Satan, and how those acts affect both the world and specific individuals in the world, it is only fitting that he be given a bit of an introduction.

In the Bible he first appears in the Garden of Eden. From that moment until he is cast into the Abyss, in Rev. 20, he is a continuous, lethal, menace to both mankind and the world in which he lives.

Satan's story begins somewhere in eternity-past. He is a created being so he cannot be viewed as anywhere near equal to God. The story is recorded by Isaiah, in the 14th chapter: "How you have fallen from heaven, O morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to earth, you who once laid low the nations! You said in your heart, I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain.

I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.

But you are brought down to the depths of the pit. [Note; The Hebrew for the name morning Star' is translated as Lucifer" in the Latin Vulgate.] Lucifer: Angel of light.

[Author's comment: At one time, Satan might have been the 'brightest bulb on the tree', but he was never the 'sharpest tack in the carpet'!]

Jesus refers to Satan with the name of Beelzebub, the prince of demons. (The Greek form of
