Strength & Beauty: the Book of Ruth

About this ebook
Redemption is the most important biblical subject for a Christian to understand. We have been purchased by the blood of Christ, and because of that purchase, are no longer slaves to sin. Charles Spurgeon said, “I thought I could have leaped from earth to heaven at one spring when I first saw my sins drowned in the Redeemer's blood.” Though our redemption occurred thousands of years later when Jesus died on the cross, the Old Testament’s Book of Ruth points to this redemption in such a sweet and comforting way. This simple, historic tale of Boaz and Ruth plucks the heartstrings, but teaches many lessons of God’s love for us. “Strength and Beauty: the Book of Ruth” is designed to encourage a believer’s journey to a closer walk with Jesus. By understanding the Levirate marriage of the Old Testament Law, we can see the great miracle that has been accomplished on our behalves. With seven chapters, and five discussion questions per chapter, “Strength and Beauty” is perfect for small groups or home-group Bible studies, in addition to individual study and growth. Rejoice, for we have been redeemed by the blood of the Lamb!

¹³ For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son ¹⁴ in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
Colossians 1:13-14 (NASB)
To the One who set the captives free, and who redeemed me! The Bible reminds us how we can demonstrate our love for Him, by keeping His commandments. Jesus summed up those commandments by telling us to love Him with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. It sounds like we are to be completely sold out for Him. LORD, help me to love You the way You deserve to be loved!
Preface:
In the Bible, there is not a subject more important or pervasive than redemption. Simply speaking, redemption is the act of purchasing back an item that has been sold. A price must be paid to return that item to the original possessor. Without God, the Bible tells us that we are slaves to sin. Picture the slave market of the pre-Civil War era in Charleston, South Carolina, and while you’re at it, picture yourself on display for all to purchase. We could be purchased by the cruelest slave owner, who will work us to the bone, whip us when we trip and will be responsible for our lives and certainly, our deaths.
But then a buyer comes in and outbids the rest. Instead of harming us, he sets us free. Though we are free, we are so astounded by his amazing act of love that we choose to serve him, for the rest of our lives. Because he loved us first, we
now love him, and his love was more than just a word. It came with the greatest action.
That is what God did for each of us. To cut the bonds of slavery, Jesus came and set the captives free. Because God tells
us that there can be no forgiveness of sin without the spilling of innocent blood, Jesus became our Passover Lamb. He died for our sins, and if we repent of our sins and believe on Him as our Messiah, we receive the reward for His perfect life, just as He received the death for our imperfect lives! What a great trade for us, but what an awesome cost for Him! We know how the Father looked upon this sacrifice:
Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him.
Isaiah 53:10
It pleased the Father, because through that event, all of us had a chance of a relationship with Him. There was no other way. Jesus prayed three times in the Garden of Gethsemane that if there was any other way, for the Father to allow this cup to pass from Him. Redemption cost Jesus His life, and at the same time, cost the Father and the Son the relationship they had treasured for eternity. When our sins were placed upon the shoulders of Jesus, the Father turned away, as He could not look upon sin. How did Jesus respond? My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?
Notice the loss of relationship even in the terminology Jesus used. MY GOD
still reveals love and knowledge, but the relationship of MY FATHER
is noticeably absent. Though salvation is free, we never should lose sight of the cost of our redemption.
Paul says,
⁷ In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace ⁸ which He lavished on us.
Ephesians 1:7-8 (NASB)
The blood of Jesus is the currency for our redemption. Another aspect of redemption that we should not forget is that everyone is redeemable! When God called Jonah to go to Nineveh, Jonah ran in the opposite direction. He got on a boat headed to Tarshish, and when his shipmates began to see the storm ravaging the boat as a direct result of Jonah’s fight with the LORD, they threw him overboard. Swallowed by a large fish, Jonah spent three days in that darkness. Eventually, he found his way to Nineveh, shared the gospel, and amazingly all of the Ninevites began to follow the LORD! This did not please Jonah, sadly, as he wanted God to punish his enemies, not forgive them. Each of us tends to have a Nineveh in our lives, as well, but we need to remember, each of us were likely that Nineveh
in someone else’s life before God redeemed us.
Each person who we see stumbling in sin should not receive our judgment, but our love, for their lives mirror ours. Before God saved us, we were shackled by a ball and chain to that life of sin. The name Jesus means, God is salvation,
and without that salvation, we are all lost. In fact, we all deserve to be lost, but by His grace, we have been redeemed!
This beautiful romance at the beginning of the history books of the Old Testament tells a tale of Ruth, from Moab. Through this book, we can glean more than the fields of Boaz; we can glean about our own redemption! With discussion questions at the end of each chapter, this book is a wonderful, 7-week small group study, yet it also can recharge your personal walk with the One who did so much for all of us.

Chapter 1, There’s a Lot Going on in Moab!
This book is one of the gems of the Old Testament. In this sweet tale of life, death, loss, gain and romance, there is a subtle foreshadowing of the life each believer has in Jesus Christ! The first leg of the journey is from Bethlehem to the land of Moab.
¹ Now it came about in the days when the judges governed, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehem in Judah went to sojourn in the land of Moab with his wife and his two sons.² The name of the man was
