    Time Changes Everything

    Time changes everything.

    It begins to disappear.

    Speeding up beyond comprehension

Like the drum major in a silent movie.

    Floating by without effort

It starts as a lazy river

And ends up breaking the sound barrier.

The old woman, Ruth, stood in the rain, barely hidden by the trees, as she curiously peered at the traffic whirling past just a few feet away. She wore only a nightgown, robe and fuzzy pink slippers. The robe was short sleeve, with a peter pan collar, pink and white print, with snaps down the front. The white night gown hung below the robe, giving her the look of an odd ground level apparition, glowing in the dark.

Ma, what are you doing out here? came the impatient question.

Ruth turned her face to the rain, a heart breaking hunger etched on her face. I just wanted to feel the rain on my face again.

Let’s get you inside before you get pneumonia.

It’s summer Sarah. It’s a warm rain. She smiled angelically. Your father and I would walk in the summer rain. We loved the warm soft drops. They felt like silk.

You don’t even like silk against your skin, she corrected. You always said it felt creepy and made you shudder.

Ruth sighed deeply and stared at her daughter. Ok, then, smooth. The drops feel smooth. She smiled conspiratorially. Your father and I even made love in the rain. It was liberating.

Ma! replied Sarah sharply. I can’t have this conversation with you.

Oh, Sarah, you’re such a prude sometimes. She faced the rain again and inhaled noisily. It feels so wonderful. So alive. So, so, so nourishing.

I just can’t think about, talk to you about, you and daddy, you know. Oh, God.

How do you think you got here? she grinned wickedly. Immaculate conception?

Let’s get inside. People are staring.

Ruth gave her daughter a dismissive wave. They won’t remember what we look like two feet down the road. Why are you here anyway?

Sarah frowned. Mrs. Jones called me. She saw you out here.

That poor old thing is such a noisy biddy. She sighed loudly again. I suppose she doesn’t have much else in her life besides staring out as the world goes by.

She’s younger than you are, ma.

Not in her head, Sarah. I think she was old when she was twenty. No love making in the rain for her.

    Ma!

Ok, ok, I’ll go in as soon as I find Fluffy.

Sarah looked at her mother in horrified disbelief. Ma, Fluffy is dead, she said in a soft frightened whisper.

I know that, Sarah, replied Ruth impatiently. That was Fluffy one. I’m talking about Fluffy two, Ruth looked down and shook her head. "Not very creative in the name department am I? At any rate, she showed up at the back door a couple of days ago. You know how cats are. You don’t pick them, they pick
