    About the Author

    Recognizing the Shepherd

    Let me tell you about a man who was on a journey to find a treasure. His journey took him across the majestic mountains. Each morning the dew sparkled like diamonds as the sun rose to shine through the trees. The songs of the birds echoed throughout the day. And, in the evening, the sun’s rays turned to shades of red, gold and purple as the sun sank behind the mountain range.

    But all along the way, would you believe this man failed to see and enjoy these beauties? Do you know why? His mind was so filled with worry about what lay ahead. You see, his treasure was on the other side of the great, wide river, a river too wide and treacherous for man to swim. What will I do? How will I ever get across it? he kept saying to himself.

    Then on the other side of the mountain, and into the valley, the shades of night were falling. He could hear the treacherous rapids. He strained his eyes to see in the dim light, and much to his wonderment and surprise, he saw that the natives had built a foot bridge to span the river.

    Then he remembered the little man who had told him what the natives had done. But he had not believed the man. After all, so many people said that it was not so, that it was an impossible feat.

    Oh, all my worry was for nothing! If only I had trusted the man. If I had only believed the truth, then I could have enjoyed my journey. How I wish I could go back to see and enjoy those beauties that I missed.

    But, behold, it was too late, for he could not pass that way again.

    Does that remind you of any one you know; perhaps yourself? It’s really a description of each one of us at some time in our lives. Some of you will say that describes you right now – that your mind is filled with so much worry about what lies ahead that you cannot enjoy your journey through life. But I hope that most of us can say, That described me at one time in my life, but no more, for I have learned to trust my Shepherd. I now believe the words that my Shepherd has spoken, and this has brought calmness into my life.

    The theme for this lesson is RECOGNIZING THE SHEPHERD. Have you ever really thought about it? It is vital to our happiness as a Christian to be able to recognize Him at work in our daily lives. When we can do this, it will help to smooth the way for us.

    The background for the lesson will be the 23rd Psalm. Most of us memorized that Psalm when we were very young. We need to say it often, or else read it often, so that it will be intertwined into our thinking. We also need to study and learn about the sheep and their characteristics. We need to know about the shepherd, and how he cared for the sheep. It is only when we know about a real shepherd and his sheep that we will be able to understand the meaning in every line of David’s Psalm. Much of our happiness and serenity depends on understanding this Psalm.

    Now, let’s quote this Psalm together:

    "The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.

    He maketh me to lie down in green pastures;

    He leadeth me beside the still waters,

    He restoreth my soul;

    He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.

    Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil;

    For thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.

    Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies;

    Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

    Surely, goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life,

    And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

    This was a prayer, written by David when he was an old man. It is an assertion of faith by this old man who had seen the best and the worst that life could give.

    Many people do not realize that this is a prayer. Why is that? It’s because we are accustomed to think of prayer only in the terms of petitions and requests. But as we look at this psalm, we will see that David did not make one single request. He did not begin by begging and pleading, Lord, will you be my Shepherd? Will you provide the things that I need?

    But instead, he declared, The Lord IS my Shepherd. I shall not want. David was certain that the Lord would provide for him.

    And today, we need to believe that strongly, so that when the happenings of life make us feel that He is not there, we will know assuredly that He is, and that He will give us good gifts.

    Jeremiah 29:11 tells us this, and I will paraphrase it: I know the plans that I have for you. They are good plans, and not evil. They are plans to give you a future and a hope.

    This was God talking to the people in Jeremiah’s day, but when we read it, it is God talking to us. Listen again, to what God is telling us: I know the plans that I have for you. They are good plans, and not evil. They are plans to give you a future and a hope.

    But someone may say, Well, if God’s plans for me are so good, then why do I have all of this trouble in my life? Why are things so wrong? Why do I have this problem over which I have no control? Now, I think good would be a life without any of these problems.

    Remember this: It is very urgent that we learn and understand what good is.

    What is good anyway?

    When we say things are good, we are thinking of the things that make for happiness for living and comfort for the body; things such as enough money, good cars, nice homes, good jobs, healthy children, obedient children, etc. Isn’t that right? But REMEMBER, the things that God considers good are the things that will help us to grow and mature as a Christian, the things that will help to build character, and strengthen our soul, to fit our soul for heaven.

    Now I ask you, Do the things that we consider good, such as money, cars, etc., ever build strength of character? No! Will they fit my soul for heaven? DEFINITELY NOT!

    Isn’t it true that we grow and mature more when we are working through problems than when things are going well? It’s true! So a trouble-free life may not be the best after all.

    We need to praise God, even for the problems that we have, because He has told us He has a plan for our lives. And if He is allowing these things, we can be sure that He is going to work them into the plans that He has for our lives.

    You see, our troubles, our problems, our pains -- these are the pruning of the branches which are so vital for the production of fruit.

    When I was growing up, my parents had a florist shop, and my father grew many of his own flowers. We had a huge hot
