About this ebook

Dawn shied away from adults. It meant she would have to chat. There was no need for anyone to delve in to her past or her present. Besides, if they did get to know Dawn, they would not approve of her career. Dawn met Ben when she went down to the beach. He was a youngster all of thirteen. Little did she know that his father was a single parent. Soon enough Carter and Ben took her out. Carter and Dawn’s relationship soon blossomed in to more than a friendship. They didn’t discuss Dawn at all. He was the detective and could find the information if he really needed to know about her past. Until the day that Dawn felt she had to tell Carter what she did for a living. He was shocked and horrified. He immediately left. He didn’t see Dawn for quite a while. She seemed to be dodging him rather well. Until her birthday. The family pushed and prodded. Carter soon decided that he needed Dawn in his life. Life wasn’t the same without her. But what was Dawn’s little secret?

    CHAPTER 1

Benjamin sat on the little bench and looked out at the ocean. Dawn slowly sat down.

You don’t look too happy today. Benjamin nodded and looked away.

Might help if you talk about it. Benjamin nodded again. He took out his sandwiches wrapped in a wax paper and threw them in to the bin.

    My name is Dawn.

    Benjamin.

    That your lunch?

    Uhu.

Your Mum make it for you?

    Nope. Dawn nodded.

You didn’t make those for yourself.

    Nope.

Then it must have been your father.

    Yep.

Mmmmhhh. So you got jam and peanut butter. Benjamin roared with laughter and nodded.

So why don’t you just tell him that you are past the stage of jam and peanut butter?

Because he never listens. Never ever listens to a thing I say. Dawn smiled.

You feeling out of sorts today? Ben sighed.

I told Dad there was tuck today. And he forgot.

So you kind of missed out. Ben nodded.

There will be other tuck days. Don’t let something so small make you feel all crabby. At least you have folks. Ben nodded.

    I know.

Better than being all on your own. Ben smiled and nodded

    Tell you what.

    And what is that?

You pass here in the morning?

    Yes Ma’am.

Meet me and I will swap. Ben looked at Dawn in disbelief.

    You gunno swap sarnies?

Hey I like jam and peanut butter sarnies.

    Should have said.

You didn’t offer! Benjamin roared with laughter.

So Ben. What time should we meet? For our little trade off. Benjamin grinned.

    Are you serious?

Yes I am. Is there something that you are allergic to?

    Yep.

Peanut butter and jam? Benjamin roared with laughter and nodded.

    No. I eat everything.

Brown or white bread? Or do you prefer bread rolls?

Kind of like bread rolls. Brown or white. I don’t mind bread either. Dawn nodded and smiled. She put out her hand and shook hands with Benjamin.

So we have a deal. Come here empty handed and I will bop you on the head. Benjamin chuckled. Dawn smiled to herself. She could see the little dark cloud disappearing.

    So what time?

    Seven thirty.

That would suit me nicely. So I will see you here tomorrow. She smiled as she saw a gent walking over.

So is this the peanut butter and jam maestro? Benjamin smiled and looked up.

    Yes that is my Dad.

Well nice to meet you. And see you tomorrow. Benjamin smiled and nodded.

Dawn got up and walked down to the beach. It was nice to chat to Ben but she didn’t need any adult conversation. The minute they started talking it lead to the questions of what she did for a living. It had been a while since she actually sat down and chatted to anyone but she was comfortable with who she was and she didn’t need the irritations. At times she thought it best sticking to herself. Even though she had become a loner and a bit of a hermit. She had often seen Ben sitting waiting on the bench in the afternoons. She walked along the beach and smiled to herself. She had lifted his spirits. She stopped and looked at the little shells and smiled. They were all crushed. A little how she had felt at times. And Ben as well. She carried on walking.

    Carter smiled and sat down.

Chatting up the young ladies Ben. Ben chuckled.

I have seen her here quite often. Always on her own. Today she sat down and chatted.

Pretty young lady. Benjamin smiled and nodded. They both looked at her as she walked along.

    Ready for home?

I am Dad. They both got up. Carter looked at the bin but never said a word. He saw the sandwiches which had been tossed in to the bin.

Should we make a detour and go and buy some cold meats for tomorrows lunch?

No thanks Dad. I would prefer it if you gave me peanut butter and jam.

    You sure about that?

Yes Dad. I am sure. Carter smiled and nodded.

Son I forgot all about tuck this morning. Next time, remind me. Carter pulled him closer and hugged him.

It’s okay Dad. We have tuck every week. Carter smiled to himself. The comment wasn’t what he had expected.

I’m sorry. It just slipped my mind. Ben smiled.

Really okay Dad. They headed to the van and hopped in. Benjamin was quiet for a while.

You okay Ben? Benjamin smiled and nodded. They watched as Dawn walked back and walked up to the road. She looked up and waved at Ben and gave him the thumbs up. He chuckled and did the same. Carter stared. She was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Oh he had admired her figure. But she was gorgeous.

    Ben? Ben chuckled.

She is absolutely beautiful! Ben chuckled and nodded.

    That she is.

What is her name? Ben gurgled with laughter.

    Dawn.

Oh she is lovely. Ben nodded and smiled. Carter drove out and looked everywhere to see if he could spot her but she was gone.

Dawn walked in to her home. She lived in what looked like a little house. It was over the road from the beach and it was prime property. It was a five bedroomed house. Three bedrooms were upstairs and the others downstairs. The house had an enormous garden at the back. Access was through the garages in front. She sat down on her sofa and smiled. It was good to chat to someone for a change. She never spoke to anyone. Her family had turned against her when she sold her flat and moved to her new home. They didn’t even know the address. They were riddled with jealousy when they found out her net worth. Her father had accidentally opened her bank statement and had seen the balance.

She walked over to her office and settled in front of her laptop and placed her bets for the day. She didn’t place big bets but kept them minimal. It took her about two to three hours every day to sit and place her bets. She knew the results from all the football games. She knew every team. She knew when changes were made. She made sure she kept up to date if a football player was sold to another team. Her life revolved around the world of sport. She sat for hours doing research on the players and the teams. That is how she made her money and her money grew daily. At the end of every week she would withdraw her winnings for the week and have them deposited in to her banking account. There were days that she never made any money. But the losses were a lot less than her winnings.

She looked up and it suddenly looked dark. She looked at her watch. She had already spent three hours at the laptop. She got up and walked over to the kitchen. She smiled as she took the loaf of Wholegrain bread and started making sandwiches for Ben. She made a chicken mayonnaise mix and put it on one of the sandwiches. On the other she put ham and cheese with a thin layer of mustard. She wrapped the sandwiches in the wax wrap and put it in the fridge. She walked back to the lounge and put the telly on. She picked up her knitting and started knitting. It was late when she got up and headed for bed.

Carter stopped the van and parked in his usual spot at the beach. His premises were just over the road from the beach.

Have a good day Ben. Ben smiled and nodded.

    And you Dad.

See you later. Same spot. Ben chuckled and nodded. Carter started walking to his offices. The school was just up the road. It worked well having his premises so close to school. Even though it was a long afternoon for Ben. But he did have sports which he took part in during the afternoons.

Dawn walked over the road. She quietly walked over to Ben.

Hand them over! Ben roared with laughter.

Good morning! He smiled as she sat down.

So. He looked at the sandwiches in her hand. He took his out and held them in his hand.

Those better be peanut butter and jam. If not. He grinned.

    And what have I got?

I didn’t have fresh bread so excuse the little green bits. But penicillin is good for one I am told. Ben roared with laughter as they traded sandwiches. He carefully put his sandwiches in his bag. She held Ben’s sandwiches in her hand which he had just passed over.

And now you walk to school.

    Yes Ma’am. Dawn nodded.

Kind of neat that. Seeing the ocean in the morning and recharging the endorphins. Then you go to school and then you are back again. Ben nodded and smiled.

    What are endorphins?

Well it is our happy, feel good chemical which is inside our body. I find that the ocean seems to calm me and recharge my batteries. Ben smiled and nodded.

So your Dad. Does he work hereabouts? Ben pointed.

    In that building over there.

Oh my. That sure is lucky. But he starts kind of early doesn’t he? Ben nodded.

So that I can get to school on time.

Well I am ready for a stroll. You ready? Ben smiled as he got up. They started walking to the school yard.

    Can I ask questions Ben?

    Sure.

    Your Mum.

Died a very long time ago. Just after I was born.

Sad to hear that. Ben smiled.

It is just Dad and I.

    And a girlfriend or two.

Oh Dad doesn’t date. He is sworn off women. After what happened to Mom.

And what did happen to Mom?

She overdosed when I was born.

    He must have loved her.

Sometimes I think so. But sometimes I wonder too. We don’t have any photographs of her up in the house. None. So I don’t really know. Dawn put her arm around his shoulder.

    And how old are you?

    Thirteen.

Nice age that. He chuckled and nodded. She stopped at the gate.

Hey I will see you this afternoon. Same time I guess. Ben smiled and nodded. She smiled as she walked off.

    Enjoy the sarnies. She chuckled.

Remember. Skip the green! Ben roared with laughter and shook his head as he walked in to the school grounds.

It was first break and Ben sat with his sandwiches. He slowly unwrapped them and took one and sank his teeth in to it. He almost groaned as he tasted the tangy chicken and mayonnaise sandwich. He only ate half. The rest he kept for the next break. It was the same when the second break came. He ate half of the other sandwich. He kept the rest for when he went home.

He walked down to the beach after school. He looked around but Dawn wasn’t there. It was too early. He sat and read his book. He smiled as she walked over the road.

Hey! He chuckled. She sat down on the bench.

And how was school today? Ben nodded.

Good. Really good. She smiled and nodded.

My sarnies were really neat! She chuckled.

I am glad. Mine too. I heated them up in the microwave. Ben groaned. Dawn roared with laughter.

And did you have a good day?

I had an exceptional day. I ordered my car. And that will be delivered in about two weeks’ time. Now when that arrives I will take you for a spin. Ben chuckled.

We have the big four by four.

I love a four by four. That will be next. But I thought something small for now.

So what color did you choose?

Red. The most beautiful red ever.

    And what car is it?

Not telling. But the minute I have it you can come for a ride. A nice surprise.

    Ben chuckled.

    Do you live around here?

Over the road. Ben smiled and nodded.

Do you come here every day? I have seen you quite often.

I do. I can go and sit in Dad’s offices. But I prefer this. I play soccer. But the season has ended. And I don’t really like rugby. I like tennis.

    I love tennis.

    Really? Dawn nodded.

You tell me when and we can go and have a game.

We could play at school. They leave the courts open in the afternoons.

    Awesome idea! Ben smiled.

    CHAPTER 2

    Oh Dad is heading over.

Well I am going to go for my stroll. See you for the handover in the morning. Ben chuckled as she got up. She waved at Carter and walked off and whispered.

What a dish! Dawn let out a little groan. She smiled as she strolled along. She loved her walks in the afternoons. And she had enjoyed talking to Ben. But she stayed away from people. Any adult. They were so opinionated. The minute anyone knew she had a little bit of money behind her they tried to befriend her. So she adopted the habit of not getting close. Staying away suited her a whole lot better.

Carter smiled as he walked up to Ben. He didn’t spot any sandwiches in the bin. He sat down on the bench.

    And there she goes again.

She is kind of lonely Dad. We walked all the way to school this morning. Just chatting.

And what did you chat about?

    Mom.

Oh? Ben nodded. Carter smiled. Ben did not talk about his mother at all. He never shared his feelings and there were things that he did not discuss. His mother was one of those topics that were taboo. Carter put his arm over Ben’s shoulder and hugged him.

She is a nice looking lady.

She is Dad. Nice inside too. And she has ordered a car. And when that arrives we are going to go for a drive. Can I do that?

Yes son you can. As long as I know in advance. I mean tell me before you go. Not afterwards. Safety first. Ben smiled and nodded.

So what does she do for a living?

I don’t know Dad. I don’t even know if she works.

I am sure she does. If she is buying a new car. Where does she live?

Not sure Dad. I will ask her tomorrow. She pointed to the house over there. Carter smiled and nodded.

Well then that is where she lives. They both got up and Dawn started walking back. They both waved and she waved and smiled. Carter smiled. They both chuckled as she started kicking a ball to one of the teenagers. She giggled as she walked off. Carter smiled.

    Seems kind of young.

She does. Not young young. Something like you Dad.

Kind of old! Ben roared with laughter. Carter chuckled as he held his arm over Ben’s shoulder.

Carter turned and looked back. They watched as she crossed the road and walked in to one of the houses.

    Right.

    Maybe she lives there.

"I don’t think so. Those houses sell for a few million. The last one that sold was a huge place. Five bedrooms.
