About this ebook

This I Believe . . .(I Believe) is a heartfelt series of reflections from a woman born in Middle America in the middle of the 20th century. Robin Munson scavenges the depths and the shallows of her mind to share her perspective on subjects ranging from the ongoing battle between humans and ants to the possibility of redemption to a woman's quest for the perfect bag. It is a hodgepodge of observations and confessions strung together with a light touch and a wry smile.

    Introduction

This is a collection of personal essays that I’ve written over the course of the past ten years. It spans a time of tumultuous transition from middle age to, let us say, late middle age. (After all, who knows where the half-way point will be?) It’s been a time of great loss and difficult lessons, but it’s also been a time of growth and new adventures. I’m a bit of a late bloomer in some ways, having only just begun to feel truly at home in my own skin, so while I feel that at 60 I have finally reached an age where I can share my view of the world, I also recognize that by the time I reach 80 I may have to revise all of it! The title expresses uncertainty – which, in my experience, is the only certainty in life. So I apologize in advance for any ambiguities or inconsistencies. They are in keeping with my life, which I admit, is always a work in progress.

    This I Believe, I Believe

One day last year I heard the last broadcast on NPR of a series called, This I Believe. I had only heard it for the first time maybe two years before, and I must confess, every time they announced a new segment I half expected to hear a bar or two of a song that was popular when I was a little girl, I Believe. They probably thought of it and decided against it as being too schmaltzy. Wise.

I really loved this series. It is fascinating to hear people from all walks of life and in all sorts of circumstances make a public statement about their most privately held and most central core belief. Most of the time I would listen and think to myself, Gee! That's a good one! I believe that, too! But I had never consciously thought about most of these ideas. They just informed my life, always working at a subliminal level, the mirepoix that flavors the soup, but whose taste nobody can identify. (I had an English teacher in high school who said that was the mark of good literature; it confirms what you already know, but says it in a new and powerful way.)

Then, inevitably, I would say to myself, Gee, I really ought to write a This I Believe essay and send it in. Then I would think: Who knows? They might choose mine to put on the air". (Notice the immediate departure from ‘Art for Art's Sake'?)

So I have to ask myself this question: Do I really
