"I write the books I want to read. It's really that simple. As an author, I try my best to make every story a roller coaster ride through a world that is both mysterious and familiar. I hope my books leave readers satisfied, but wanting more. I try to make my books thought-provoking, but not preachy. At its core, a good book should be fun, and I try my very best to deliver that to my readers. But mostly, I just write the book I want to read." - Brandon Hale

This issue of The Man From Newella is dedicated to the finest group of writers I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. You know who you are. Thanks, guys, for all the guidance.

    Prologue: Finding the Soldier

After the sheriff told me his tale, I knew I had to find the soldier he mentioned at the end. I also knew the odds were against me. In the Crimson Age, death was more common than a head cold, which meant it was very unlikely she was still alive. Still, I had to try.

I went back to the Historical Academy and created a file called The Soldier’s Tale. I had three bits of information to go on. First and foremost, I had a name: Nat. The second piece of info was that she was apparently a soldier. The third piece of info was the when and where. I knew this was about five years after the first blood rains and I knew it was in central Florida.

I used the Academy’s network to send out the following message: "Looking for Nat: A soldier who traveled with the Man from Newella, c. 2086."

Every educational facility on the planet (and the moon) got the notice. If any of them had any contact with my mysterious soldier, I knew they’d let me know. It was a long shot, but it was all I had.

Once I put the word out about finding the soldier, I went back to following up on some of my other leads. I’m telling ya, finding info about that man is easy, but finding info about his early adventures is a bitch. I talked to hundreds of old men and women who claimed to have known him from those days. Most of em turned out to be full of shit.

A month later, after I’d more or less given up on the hope of finding the soldier, I received a message from someone named Natalie. The message was short and to the point: Your info is incorrect. I wasn’t a soldier.

I knew I’d found my Nat. Something about the certainty in those two sentences told me she was the soldier I’d been looking for.

    ***

I met Nat at a restaurant in central Virginia. Turns out, she’s the CEO of a research corporation devoted to studying wormholes and interdimensional doorways.

She was a little pissed that I’d called her a soldier, and I gotta admit, I don’t really blame her. If there’s an opposite to a soldier, it’s Nat. I probably should change the name of her file, but the entire academic community now knows her as the soldier. It would be a major pain in the ass to change it now, so we’ll just have to accept her file name is a bit of a misnomer.

Anyway, I was sure I’d found the right person. She remembered the rocket taking off and she remembered dropping off the hover-bikes. This old woman was definitely the person the sheriff had watched ride off into the sunset with the Man from Newella.

Her story was unknown to the world because she’d never shared it. She said it was a time she didn’t remember fondly and she had no interest in becoming a celebrity just because she knew the Man.

I know what you’re thinking. You’re wondering why she agreed to talk to me. I was wondering that myself, so I asked her.

After some thought, she looked at me and said, I’m getting old. It’s time for me to retire… and it’s time for the world to know exactly what he sacrificed for us.

Of course, we all know what ultimately happened to the Man, and I said as much.

No, she told me. "You know what he did for us, but you don’t know what he sacrificed. Not really. I think it’s time somebody told the world about that sacrifice."

That just confused me. You knew him in 2086, I said. That was a long damn time before he faced the darkness. Years. There’s no record of you being around when he made the stand.

I wasn’t there for the stand, she said, but his sacrifice was long before that fateful day, I assure you.

    ***

Like the sheriff, she let me record everything. What you’re about to read is a complete transcript of the story she told. Again, please excuse the file’s title. Because of the sheriff’s misinterpretation of her appearance, Nat will forever be known as the soldier. Hell, in a way,
