    Chapter 1

Scott Adams and Thomas Watkins worked on the Stone house Farm.

The year was 1915 and England was at war with Germany.

The farm was situated near Heddon on the Wall about seven miles west of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Both boys were fifteen year’s of age.

And both boys slept on the farm.

They had to sleep in the place above the stable their beds were piled up hay it could have been worse. Because the straw was softer than the bare floorboards and in the winter it kept them warm.

The barn was not heated in any way but when they were in the hay for ten minutes it got lovely and warm.

The Mistress of the farm would send Lucy out with their meals.

They got Porridge every morning and a mixed menu every night but the food was very poor sometimes they got just a plate of Turnips or a plate full of Potatoes, but the two lads used to say that they could be worse off.

Lucy would bring their breakfasts and dinner’s in a big black pan, the pan had a steel handle Lucy was just twelve years old, and she always stops for five minutes because she loved the company of the two boys.

When Lucy was back in the main house and her day’s work was finished she was left alone Lucy had a lonely life.

Lucy had a soft spot for Scott but Scott treated her as if she was just a child that really was the truth to Scott and Tom Lucy was just the girl that brought them their food.

The two lads were trying to get their Parents consent to sign up in the army but so far their parents said no.

The farmer's name was Jack Wilson.

He was a hard man but a fair man if you showed that you were trying he would say nothing, but if he thought you were trying to pull the wool over his eyes then he would come down on them like a ton of bricks.

They earned Ten shillings and sixpence a week.

They would lie at night thinking about about the war in France one day the two boys were feeding hay to the horses and Mrs. Wilson came to them and said ‘You two stay in the yard tomorrow there’s some bloody nosey bodies coming from the government they are coming to look at you and all our help on the farm, it’s got something to do with the war.’

When the next day came and the two lads were working in the yard chopping firewood Mr. Wilson came to the back door and said. ‘Come in you to and mind your manners.’

When they got into the house all the farm workers were in the back kitchen.

Mr. Wilson went into the front room and came back with two men who were just like what Scott thought government men should look like.

The men said ‘Right Mr. Wilson let us take it from here.’

Tthey walked up to the men then one of the two said

‘All women can go back to their jobs we just want to look at men.’

Then they waited for the women to go and then they went to the first man and said. ‘How old are you and what job do you do on the farm.’

‘I am eighteen Sir and I drive the hay-maker.’

‘Well you can go back to your work.’

He went to the next man and said the same question until they got to the two lads.

Then Scott said. ‘I am fifteen and I do what I’m told to do.’

‘Well you are too young but when you get a bit older get down and sign on.’

    The same happened to Tom.

But when the man had said he was too young, Tom said ‘Scott and I would go to the army tomorrow but are parents won't let us.’

The government men only got one man to go and sign up.

Then Life went back to normal on the farm.

It was two days later when the two lads were cleaning out the culvert that ran all the way around the farmhouse, Farmer Wilson came around the corner and there was a very big man with him they stopped in front of the two lads and the farmer said. ‘This man is called Ollie Jennings and you too will call him Mr. Jennings and if he needs a hand at any time then you too will help him is that clear.’

The two lads both said yes together.’

The farmer gave the big man the little room that was above the tool
