    Cooking Fit - Annie Mello

    Allow Me To Introduce Myself

As a nutrition and fitness coach, I have been striving to push people to their ultimate goals for the past 10 years. Since I can remember, my life has been involved in and around fitness. I was a gymnast and dancer and throughout high school I played basketball, tennis, volleyball, and ran track. I also played tennis at the collegiate level.

Making a difference in someone’s life and getting them to their personal goals has always been what drives me as a coach and mentor. There is no better feeling in the world than seeing people make goals for themselves and then strive to achieve them. Throughout my fitness journey, I have really focused on getting clients to gain knowledge about fitness and make healthy food choices for their life. One of my biggest passions is focusing on the nutrition aspect of health and wellness. My goals are to make fitness a daily habit in people’s lives, to make learned habits routines, and doing all while having fun and not feeling restricted through diet.

In 2001 I was diagnosed with a gluten allergy. In the previous year leading up to this I was constantly battling stomach issues and migraines so badly I didn't know what to do. I was working out over three hours a day and was not seeing any results. I was basically living off egg beaters, rice cakes, and anything 100 calorie packs had to offer and was on a downhill slope. How could this be ? I was not eating any calories so I should be losing weight right? WRONG. In fact, so very WRONG!

A friend at the gym had said that my symptoms were very similar to those she had been experiencing, and she was just diagnosed with celiac disease. I had to ask her what celiac disease even was. She explained that she was allergic to wheat and gluten. So I asked again, What is gluten? After hearing her explanation, I thought I would never be able to eat again. For one week I tried going gluten-free. What I discovered was I felt like a completely new person! My headaches were gone, I didn’t feel nauseated or sick, and I felt like I could see clearly again—with no tunnel vision. After one month of eliminating gluten from my diet, I dropped 15 pounds! My body had become so inflamed, that when I removed the poison (gluten), my body could go back to a place of normalcy.

When I was diagnosed, there wasn’t the gluten-free craze like there is today. In fact, when I mentioned the words gluten intolerance or celiacs, you’d have thought I said leprosy or some other contagious disease. When I explained my disease, people looked at me like I was from another planet! So I had to come up with a game plan.

After I was diagnosed, I began taking care of my two year old sister. We were living in California and I was a senior in college. I didn’t have the foggiest idea what to do with a person of this age, so I began baking with her. She loved it. Each Friday I would spend the day with her. We would experiment with some fun treats—making them a healthy gluten-free alternative for me. This is where my passion for cooking was found. We began to create more
