    Gustav carefully began laying the fine sheet of gold leaf on the sizing and blew softly. There was something entrancing about the way the gold fluttered before adhering to the canvas. He never tired of this process. It was a reward in itself. He loved the brilliance and the richness that the gold or silver gave to his paintings and the thought cast him back centuries to the illuminated manuscripts and Byzantine works that had inspired him.

    As the brush smoothed the creases from the gold, he knew it was probably the last sheet that the painting would need. He sighed knowing the picture was nearing completion and he would need to sever himself from its thrall. It would be leaving him.

    In some ways he was lucky because he knew his works were desired. He didn’t have to spend time and energy finding a market to bring in money. People solicited him and he had the luxury of picking and choosing his clients. He also had the immense satisfaction of knowing his works were appreciated in his lifetime. His mind shifted for a second to the next piece he had been commissioned to do. He had already begun the sketches for it and a thrill coursed through him at the thought of new possibilities for the project. Naked women, semi-exposed, in a bed of wild flowers.
