Chapter 1
Exodus drifted, the wide blue sky stretched out above him, the vast green forest spread out below. The steady breeze was perfect for drifting. The wind wasn't too strong or too weak. Without the need to flap his long leathery wings, the fire-orange dragon hovered in one place and took in a deep breath. From between his savage teeth Exodus flicked out his pink forked-tongue to taste the crisp air. Each time he did, a thousand subtle scents came to him on the wind: hungry creatures rummaging through the forest below, withered old leaves and moldy dead trees rotting in the moist earth, lush new seedlings springing up, clear, cold water rushing towards the distant salty Emerald Sea. He could even pick out the bold scents of a number of his cousins flying far away. But Exodus wasn't interested in any of these smells. He didn't care for the company of his cousins or the commotion of the forest below. All he was interested in was flying.
High above, an eagle soared on a different breeze. Like everything else around him Exodus wasn't concerned with the bird of prey. The raptor might be ten times his size and feed on small reptiles, but Exodus wasn't afraid. It didn't matter that Exodus was as thin as a garden snake and no bigger than a soup spoon, he was still a dragon. Any creature foolish enough to attack him would regret it's mistake.
To give the eagle a reminder, Exodus let a thick stream of foul grey smoke slip out of the corner of his mouth and trail away behind him. A small but intense flame leaped out of his mouth too; a flame so hot the fire would consume almost anything that it touched.
Exodus looked back up and saw the eagle bank to one side and let the winds carry it away.
'Bird of prey,' the dragon scoffed with disgust. The tip of his long tail twitched with irritation and his razor-sharp claws clenched. Next to him, the eagle did not deserve such a noble name as 'bird of prey.' Still, Exodus admired the eagle's wisdom. The bird had known better than to attack him, even if it had needed a reminder.
Content that the eagle was gone, Exodus turned his face back to the wind and drew in another deep breath. His tail and razor-sharp claws relaxed once more as he adjusted his wings by a hair so he could continue to drift in the same place. He would have drifted on the breeze all day and night if he could have, but sooner or later he would grow hungry or tired. Exodus didn't have an exciting life, but it was a life that he loved. When he wasn't flying, he was eating small frogs or beetles or napping in the sun. As far as he was concerned, there was little else worth doing with his time. Life was about enjoying himself, and what could be better than looking after his own, personal needs?
The thought of looking after his personal needs now made Exodus' eyes grow heavy with sleep. Nearby was a large meadow full of bright flowers and tall grass. The meadow looked like the perfect place to rest.
Tucking his wings tight to his body, Exodus dropped down from the sky. He skimmed over a calm lake and then soared above the meadow. Creatures of every sort fled in fear when they saw him approach. Fairies and birds dashed off to hide in the trees while field mice, hedgehogs and other animals in the meadow disappeared into their holes or the closest bush. Even spiders vacated their webs when they saw the dragon coming.
With an amused and proud grin, Exodus watched them flee. They had every right to fear him. No matter how large or small, dragons were perfect. No other creature was as beautiful, cunning or lethal.
Exodus circled the meadow once as he looked for a place to sleep before a bed of orange lilies caught his attention. The flowers were the same shade of fire-orange that he was. They might not have been as attractive as him, but he liked the way they would complement his tough scales.
In no great hurry, the dragon descended to the ground. Sometimes in wide, slow circles, other times with his wings tucked into his body so he would drop quicker. Eventually, he landed in the middle of the bright lilies and curled up in a sunny patch, his head surrounded by fire-orange flower petals.
Exodus was almost asleep in no time when something tickled his forehead. Annoyed, the dragon snapped opened his eyes and was startled to see a butterfly with her face up close to his.
'Hey! What's your problem?' Exodus cried as he jumped back with a start. 'Can't you see I'm trying to
