1: The Lost Stone
Future
The white robed elf gazed at the ruins of his tower. It felt as if years had passed since he last came home. For all he knew it could have been a matter of minutes or weeks, or even centuries. Time could no longer be measured since the war ended. Things had changed; the laws of nature no longer applied.
But that didn't matter now. What did matter was that he and the innocents had survived and were safe in the Beyond. He was certain they would not get in here. Everything was just how he remembered it.
He hoped the others could keep him shielded. Even though this earlier version of the land was just a dream, he could still die here. The rule book of reality had been torn up and the pieces burnt to fine ash so even dreams could be fatal. He would have to work fast...
...the elf lord, shuffled up the few remaining steps, dodging chunks of stone. He paused at the gaping hole where once had stood a beautiful oak, arched door.
Will the secret room be there and contain all the things hidden? He hoped so; once they picked up his scent they would soon find his hideaway.
The ancient elf stepped through the gaping hole. As he stepped over the jagged stones, memories broke through his mental barrier, knocking his concentration totally off balance...
...the explosion rocked the thirty foot tower to its ancient foundations. Flame moved like a cyclone up through the structure clinging to the walls. A serpent of fire slithered up the winding steps, incinerating everything that was not made of stone. The children were screaming in terror. Flames were closing in on them on every floor.
From his position in the spire, the ancient one felt the heat of the fire on all seven floors. He gathered the twenty elf lings on this floor around himself, gesturing with staff of the white fire in his right hand and the sword of giants in his left. Once the wailing children were as close as they could get to him, he pushed.
A wall of white light flowed up and out like a protective umbrella. It reached down through every floor right down to the entrance hall.
Satisfied he had a shield safely around all one-hundred and eight elf lings scattered throughout the tower he pushed again...
...'snap out of it ye ole fool'...hearing her voice brought him back to his senses, the memory quickly forgotten, but the taste of smoke still on his tongue and smell heavy in his nostrils.
With renewed urgency he glanced around at the stone and dust littering the hallway floor.
Slowly, he raised his staff of power, the tip pulsing with white light. The light grew slowly brighter as he gathered his will.
Then he pushed. White light erupted from his staff. His mind willed all the debris, every chunk of stone big and small, to rise. Even the dust rose obediently into the air. Then, just for the briefest moment everything that was floating froze in mid-air.
Again, the ancient one pushed, the second blast of energy released from his staff vaporized everything raised up.
Even the dust was gone, leaving the ground floor of his tower clean.
He relaxed his will and strode to the centre of the grey stone floor and looked down. What he was looking at would have been unnoticeable to the untrained eye.
The sorcerer slipped the end of his staff into a small hole and pushed gently with his mind. It was almost a caress. The hole which the staff fitted neatly into began to expand, pushing the surrounding stone blocks away.
He smiled, pleased to see a flight of worn stone steps leading down into darkness. With staff pulsing with white light held out in front to light his
