Is Looking for Love
Online Practical?
Single life is a treasure and looking back, I can appreciate that, but would I trade my current life for being single again? Although there are beautiful things about being on one’s own, single life is just not for everyone. It is for this reason that many of us seek life partners. It’s not just about sex. Lord knows that sex doesn’t have to come with marriage. For many of us, we are looking for the security that comes with knowing that there is someone who we can trust to be there for us through our difficulties. We seek the comfort of knowing that the person we choose to love is ready and available for our sexual needs. It is the trust that comes with monogamy. When we know if each party is faithful to his/her vows, you never have to worry about STDs. Of course, many people are still looking for a fairy tale, but in today’s environment, it can be difficult or very near impossible to find. Assuming that it is even possible, how do you get it?
So what is this fairy tale? Growing up, we often imagine we would get to a certain point where we see or meet someone. They would see us too and we would fall in love. This falling in love leads to getting engaged, getting married, and living happily ever after. People that are alive in modern society know that this version of happily ever after rarely exists. Like everyone else, I was young once. I too had these dreams, but like most people, I found out that there are many pitfalls on the path to forever after. Traditionally, our society puts the responsibility of initiating the forever after in the hands of the man. So, for women seeking the fairy tale, forever after may never come if the man they fall for has different ideas. Because boys and girls are brought up with different ideas of romance, what a man wants and what a woman wants can vary so much that in a free society the two need to put some effort into making forever after or they may have to go through a few loves before they can find the ‘one’. Although the fairy tale scenario of forever after can and probably happens in today’s society, it is not such a common occurrence. This is because of the busy lives led by many individuals and the many varied paths people take in life. Not to mention the vast number of people and ideas.
I had to come to terms with the idea that my soulmate may not be where I am. Perhaps he doesn’t like ‘Whole Foods’. Perhaps he goes to a different church. Or maybe he doesn’t go to church at all. Maybe he’s lives in another state or country. After all, our world is enormous now. Gone are the days when all the people you knew were your neighbors or came from neighboring towns. Your ideal mate may not be in a venue that you frequent or vice versa, therefore your paths may never cross (at least not without a little help). Traditionally, we either see someone somewhere who catches our eye and we somehow let them know we are interested. If they are also interested, you exchange contact information and the rest is history. I remember the times when I exchanged shy smiles with men of interest and although contact information was not exchanged on the first encounter, I went back to where I first encountered my love interest to
