AUTHOR'S NOTE
"Terrorist Among Us" is a detailed analysis on the pending threat to America by Domestic/Home Grown terrorist. We will examine prior terrorist incidents that have come from within our own country and from abroad. Focus specifically on the fact that government must concentrate a substantial amount of their efforts on the fight against domestic terrorism and not only the possible foreign terrorist threat.
The emphasis in "Terrorist Among Us" is on terrorism as a domestic phenomena, with materials relating to past domestic hot spots, as well as brief historic summaries. This title will also provide global coverage and how it plays into the domestic/home grown terrorist facing our nation. This book in no way is predicting any form of terrorist attack, whether domestic or otherwise, in the future on the United States or its interest.
The book is more of a warning to our government to sit up and take notice that the possibility of domestic terrorism is real.
In Chapter one some of the names have been changed. However, as you will see the incidents as they occur are true.
CHAPTER I
WOULD YOU KNOW?
"History teaches that grave threats to liberty often come in times of urgency... when the scourge is manifest... and the need for action is great" (Thurgood Marshall)
It was July 1, 2000, and another beautiful day, in Venice, Florida. The sky was a bright shade of blue with puffy white clouds like cotton balls that seemed to be suspended. At times a bird would fly by, breaking into the water of the sky, like fish in a cerulean pond. The weather was seasonally warm with an early morning temperature of 78 degrees and the normal high of 90 degrees by mid day.
Ellis Boule had been working for "Full Flight Aviation since 1997 as a manager and flight instructor. He thought how he really enjoyed working at
Full Flight Aviation". Where else could you go to work in shorts and a tee-shirt everyday? He was now 54 and looked at this job as being his final job before he retired. Ellis had been married, for over 35 years to his wife Chloe and had two children. Their daughter, Ava, lived in Connecticut with her husband Adam and their son Martin, lived in Florida with his wife Charlotte. Ellis and Chloe agreed on to move from New England to Florida. Even though they both loved New England they just could not take the winters anymore.
Steve Hillman was an excellent boss and the owner of "Full Flight Aviation". He let Ellis run the air service while he ran the financial and charter end of the business. It was Ellis' job to sign customers up for flying lessons and to give the other company pilots their daily schedules. There were three other flight instructors he had working for him.
Before moving to Florida Ellis worked as a pilot and flight instructor at an airport in New Haven, Connecticut.
Leaning back in his soft leather office chair he thought back at how lucky he was to land this job in Florida. He saw the job on the Internet, and Chloe was the one that told him to go ahead and apply. They had already made up their minds that even if he was not able to secure employment right away they were still going to move. He would just have to look for employment when they arrived in Florida. Well clearly they no longer had to worry about that.
Ellis had been a pilot in the military where he received his pilot's license on helicopters, jets, and fixed wing aircraft. The experiences help him secure employment once he left the military. He left the military after serving six years with two of those years as a pilot during the Vietnam War. Once discharged from the military he went to work for a commercial airline as First Officer and eventually was promoted to Captain and worked as a commercial pilot for 12 years. After leaving his commercial pilot job he then took a position as a flight instructor at a local airport. The local job made him feel more like a normal person working a nine to five job and being able to go home at night instead of flying all over the country and sleeping in hotel rooms. It was in 1984 when he took the flight instructor job at Boyston Aviation
in Connecticut. He worked for Boyston Aviation
until he took the flight instructor/manager position at "Full Flight Aviation".
The flight school and charter service had a fleet of 12 aircraft. Full Flight Aviation
offered private pilot lessons, instrument rating lessons, Commercial pilot instructions as well as Multi-Engine Ratings, but did not offer training on larger jet aircraft. To keep the flight school active they developed a marketing campaign designed to lure overseas students. They used the Internet to advertise the campaign. This was so successful the flight school became comprised of more than 80% foreign nationals.
Ellis was sitting in his office, which was located behind the front desk. The wall of his office that faced the front desk was entirely glass. Marge Williams, a long time employee, worked the front desk. She would attend to scheduling the students flying lessons and book the charter flights. The glass wall that separated his office from the front desk and lobby area would allow Ellis to see if Marge had more then one person waiting. If she was busy taking care of a customer he would be able to go to the front desk and help with other customers.
It was July 1, 2000 about 8:30 a.m. when Ellis saw two males standing at the front desk. Since it was before 9:00 AM, Marge had not arrived at work. Ellis went to the front desk, he identified himself as the manager, and asked the men if he could help them or answer any questions. It appeared to Ellis that the men may have been from the Middle East with one male being taller then the other. The taller male was dressed neatly in pressed trousers of a wool type with a shirt, tie and a waistcoat matching the trousers despite the extremely hot weather. The shorter male was dresses casually in black slacks and a black short sleeve shirt opened at the collar. The taller one did most of the talking and showed very little emotion.
The taller male identified himself as Mohamed Atta.
Ellis noticed a slight accent and asked, "Did you say Hatta
?
The one identified as Mohamed Atta half smiled and said, No, it is A-T-T-A, you know like, Atta Boy
Ellis chuckled along with Atta and apologized for messing up his name. Ellis noticed that the smaller male was about 25, five feet seven inches, 160 pounds, had dark, perfect
skin, and was clean cut and very polite.
Atta was taller around five feet ten inches, slim, about 33-year-old with unblemished skin.
The smaller male then said, My name is Marwan Alshehhi
, as he reached to shake Ellis' hand.
In speaking with the two men they mentioned they were from Germany where they had been students at the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg. They later noted they were originally from the United Arab Emirates where their families still reside. Atta and Marwan showed Ellis their five-year B-1/B-2 (tourist/business) visa, which, Ellis verified as being authentic. Their English was excellent with only a hint of an accent. Over the next few months Ellis would notice that Atta always carried a briefcase even though he never opened it when Ellis was around.
They said that they were living in Nokomis, just north of Venice, Florida, where they rented a small two-bedroom house.
During their
