About this ebook

TRANSIENT WAYS is a modern day On the Road for today's dispossessed generation. This somersaults the reader into an unadulterated joy ride through squatter's streets and hobo highways. Desperate and daring characters are freight-hopping and dumpster-diving. A collection of thinly autobiographical vignettes and short stories.

What Others are Saying about Transient Ways

This book kicked ass! It is one of the few accurate descriptions of the squatter lifestyle I've seen. The ultimate message of the book is simply: live free. It has the perfect mix of poetry and personal stories. From a squatter's perspective this book is inspirational. Get it at all costs. --Twitch, in Slug and Lettuce, #49 (A zine supporting the do-it-yourself ethic of the punk community)

I am in love with this colorfully fantastic pocket-book. ... Even were I unfamiliar with impromptu rail expeditions, the deeply emotional writing would nearly nonetheless have gripped me... I only hope there are at least a few comparable sequels. --Rev. Tin Ear, Angry Thoreauan, #19

"This is an insightful and in depth diary of one woman's life experiences and travels around the US by means of hopping trains. It's interesting and personal. Worth checking out. --Duke,  Profane Existence, #32 (anarcho-punk resource magazine)

This is actually a book with a collection of stories, journal entries, and poems of modern hoboism written by Jessica Hahn on her travels across the USA. This is a really well written and enjoyable book with some fucking great photos by Dan Nelson. Excellent read. --Chris,  Aversion, summer of 1997 (British anarcho-punk zine)

This is a collection of writing and poetry by Jessica Hahn. ... Succeeds in being very inspirational as a document of achieving personal freedom. The stories are interspersed with poetry of an anti-establishment nature. This was very enjoyable and comes highly recommended. --Pete, Baldie, #4 (British zine)

Another small size book with big brave heart. Guttural love romance of living free and squatting across America. All written by true gutterpunk womyn so be sure, this is for real!! A fuckin' great read. --Boris Milakovic, Fecal Forces (Croatian zine)

It’s morning. Who knows what time it is? The light comes into the windows where it’s allowed, the incessant rain of Portland falls outside, trucks drive and squeak to a stop, heave to a start, something large and metallic hits something like itself. Dan and I are snuggled under two blankets, on our homemade bed of a big plywood board raised up on plastic milk crates, with lots of cardboard and blankets as padding. Last night he and I made a huge canopy of trash, so now I see the world through draped sheets of plastic which cover this cardboard cocoon. I started to make the top of the canopy with the pre-made structures sticking out of the wall, and got Dan excited enough to lurk the streets with me while everyone else slept, to salvage trash for our bed. Looking at it now, I think it’s quite a structure, kinda funny and impressive. Anyhow, it did its duty and we slept well ....

Then Dan woke me up in the early morning hours–still dark–to something I heard faintly in Dreamland but never cared for enough to wake up: a constant and violent banging. Someone was hammering on our squat! Dan woke up Frank and the two of them explored, finally figuring out it was some
