    Introduction

    This booklet describes my experience with Graves disease interspersed with tips to help fellow sufferers. My journey began several years ago when I suffered a thyroid storm.

    A Thyroid Storm.

    Sunrise seemed to take an eternity; I lay on the lounge sweating, although it was not hot. The combination of lack of sleep and extreme lassitude had made my mind fuzzy and erratic. I was exhausted, yet could not sleep more than 5 hours a night. I would regularly wake at 5am, drag my poor tired and heavy limbs to work and pray to survive another day of uncharacteristic mistakes and clumsiness.

    Although physically barely able to move, my mind raced. It ran from one subject to another without pause like a fast running movie. Time moved differently, sometimes slow, sometimes fast, my speech slurred and the words tumbled after one another like water rippling down a fall, rushing and excited.

    I thought it was a virus, or just a natural reaction to excess caffeine. However, that soon changed when I became breathless and my legs began to swell.
