About this ebook

Kuthius Tallerus might be old and sick, but as a sergeant of the Prisonlands border wardens he still has a job to do when a pair of exiles escape with help from the outside world.

Leading a squad of wardens, including his nephew the scout, Kuthius sets out in pursuit of the fugitives, eventually discovering this was no simple escape plan.

A dark mage with ulterior motives freed the exiles, the wizard's ultimate goal potentially impacting Kuthius personally. But can an old man who finds himself alone in the hinterlands with only his steel and wits stand against an enemy who can summon demons?

    Dear readers

This is a short story. I do not want readers to think I am trying to fool them into purchasing a novel or novella e-book, so I’m saying right up front here that this is a short story. It is approximately 11,000 words in length, which means it’s a little long for a short story though not nearly long enough to head into novella territory.

    Also … SPOILER ALERT

I want to offer a word of warning. This is a prequel story to The Kobalos Trilogy. There will be a few spoilers here, especially for those of you who have not read City of Rogues: Book I of The Kobalos Trilogy.

    1,993 years After Ashal (A.A.)

The sound of the alarm jarred Kuthius awake, the blare of horns loud enough to animate the dead, or so the old man told himself. His joints creaked and he groaned as he rolled over and sat up on the edge of the straw-filled mattress. The blaring continued outside as phlegm rolled around in his throat bringing a coughing spell he would have sworn would choke him. Instead of choking, he spat a yellow ball of guck into a bucket next to the bed.

I’m past too old for this, he said aloud to the empty room.

The din of the horns finally died, replaced by the clankings of armor and the drummings of booted feet running to and fro.

Kuthius cursed, pulled a blanket from the bed to wrap around his shoulders and forced his aching legs to stand him. He trundled across the room gradually, pausing only once to catch his breath and to stop himself from running into another bucket, this one filled with urine and droppings.

With strength still prevalent in his muscled arms, he yanked open the door and winced as the winter sun stabbed at his eyes off the fallen snow about the village.

A dark blur moved passed him. Kuthius squinted, his weak eyes slowly focusing on the figure.

    Darkbow! the old man barked.

The young man outside the door had had his back to the entrance, but now he spun about, the buckles of his leather armor and the sword belt at his waist jingling as he did. It was apparent he had been digging in a tall now-empty barrel outside the door, lifting out arrows by the handful and a long, unstrung bow of yew.

The young man scowled upon seeing Kuthius. Uncle, get back inside. This is no time for you to be out.

Other young men in leather armor jogged past the front of the hut, bows and swords on their
