Jorge’s right eye puffed up like a dead fish left too long in the sun. He could barely see out of it and was having trouble focusing on the ball.

Jorge knew that Saul Torres had told his son to come after him. That’s the kind of man he was. His fat, ugly fingerprints were all over this.

Back in the old days, Saul Torres had worked to improve conditions for his people in the central California town of Delano where they lived. Some people even thought of him as a hero. Jorge had a hard time believing this, even though his own father had said it was true.

He made a real difference, his dad had told him. Man did some good things.

To Jorge it sounded like he had to be talking about someone else. He only knew Saul Torres as a soccer coach. Behind the towering frame, the epic beer belly, and the larger-than-life stories, Jorge saw a small man who taught his players to cheat and who bullied the teenage referees into calling things his way. His loud, nasty laughter littered the parking lot long after a victory.

In Jorge’s eyes, Saul Torres was a bad man. And his son was following in his footsteps.

Ten minutes into the game, Jorge had gone up to head a ball near the center circle. But just before he made contact, Jimmy Torres’ finger found his eye. It seemed to Jorge that Jimmy hadn’t even tried to go for the ball. He just came after him.

    Aaaah! Jorge moaned.

Not surprisingly, the ref let play go on.

Ouch, that’s gotta hurt, Jimmy Torres said, smiling as they ran down the field.

The pain was terrible at first. But not being able to see right was worse. Half the field became a watery blur. But as the game went on, Jorge pushed past the pain and focused – as best he could – on doing his job. And as the team’s striker, Jorge’s job was to score.

Aztec United, Saul Torres’ team, was the stronger side and controlled the ball most of the first half. Jorge had just one real chance but wasted it. A beautiful pass from Andy García found him with only the keeper to beat, but the ball bounced hard and helplessly off Jorge’s foot before going out of bounds.

The score at the half was Aztec United 2, Goal Fever 0.

There’s still time, guys, Coach Miller told the team at the break. Beat your man to the ball and do something with it.

It was good advice. But easier said than done. Player for player, the other team was bigger, stronger, and faster.

I should’ve scored off that pass, Jorge told García, holding a cold soda can over his eye.

Don’t sweat it, López, Andy said. Bury the next one.

As the second half began, the eye had swollen to the point where Jorge could see part of it when he looked
