Kodaikanal, in a remote part of the Western Ghat mountain range, Tamil Nadu, India:
David Holcroft didn't notice the dog until it had almost reached him.
He'd been walking slowly around the footpath that bordered the lake, feeling old and thinking, as usual, about Annie. A strong wind caused the branches of the trees near the water to dance wildly. Ripples skimmed across the lake's surface in crazy kaleidoscopic patterns. Black clouds sped across the sky overhead; occasional lightning shattered the growing darkness like the outlines of broken glass splitting apart within a window frame.
The first drops of rain had begun to fall when the dog appeared, running along the footpath towards him. It was a large mixed-breed with short brown hair on the sides blending into black on its back. It ran at a swift steady pace, not pausing or faltering. When it reached David it lunged at him, slashing a shallow three-inch cut on his calf midway between his knee and his ankle, and then it continued running up the path until it was out of sight.
David stopped, shocked, and examined his ripped pants and the wound the dog had made. Not much blood was flowing, but the skin had been torn in a straight line exposing the pink flesh
