      Eight thousand tons of silver-blue globe loomed over the concrete cradle where Wade Simmons waited for the hull to cool. The walk-on ramps lowered and the shuttle’s cargo master emerged, followed by a group of four men in military uniform. A robo-carrier glided down the ramp after them. The cargo master stepped aside, produced a data pad and began conferring with the ground crew’s chief. The soldiers approached Simmons casually.

      Lieutenant Veerio? Simmons said. He held out his hand in greeting. "Welcome to Cabal."

      The soldier looked Simmons up and down carefully, shrugged then took Simmons’ hand in his own, shaking it. Pleased to meet you, Lieutenant-Commander, Veerio said. He released his grip quickly, waved at the three men standing idly nearby. This is Sergeant Peters, and Corporal’s Blake and McGee.

      Each man nodded in turn, maintaining their casual demeanor. Simmons noted the men’s razor-sharp focus. They watched their surroundings casually, but with the air of men who were alert and ready.

      I’ve been reading up on your team, Lieutenant, Simmons said. "You did good work during the Percepini Incident."

      "We did what we could. The Percepini thing was a mess. Command hasn’t let us out much since then. Worried about us, I guess."

      Peters grumbled a barely audible complaint.

      Ignore the Sergeant, Veerio added. "He’s just mad Command wouldn’t let him carouse as much as he wanted on Barkin. That our truck?" He nodded to the transport waiting behind Simmons.

      It is. Let’s get your gear stowed then I can brief you and your team on the job here.

      Sounds like a cake walk from our briefing papers, Veerio said. But I want to hear about it from you first.

      After loading their gear, the men climbed aboard the transport and Simmons ordered it to drive to the quarters arranged for them. He found himself glancing at them as the truck drove itself through the streets of Cabal.

      Veerio caught the glance. Not quite what you were expecting, Commander?

      Not quite, no, Simmons agreed.

      Doesn’t matter. We’ve been around. What’s the deal here, though? As I understand it, this colony places a solid claim on this world.

      "The Jareen,qwar protested, with warships. They’re saying Cabal’s in their sphere of influence."

      Sending in warships is a pretty serious protest, Veerio said.

      Yes, it is, Simmons agreed. "They’ve withdrawn the warships to the outer system, but they asked the Dwa’kim to
