    Dedication

This book is dedicated first and foremost to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He saved me by His grace when I was nineteen, and He has kept me by His grace and power ever since.

Next, I would love to dedicate this work to my wife, Bernice, who is the greatest wife a man could ever have. God has given her a lot of grace to put up with a guy like me. Next to Christ, she is my strength and comforter.

I also dedicate this book to my children, Sean and Megan. They are a precious gift from God, and they bring us much joy.

Also, I want to dedicate this book to everyone who will ever read it. May you find the peace, joy, comfort, and love that God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit gives.

    Introduction:

    What Is Real Joy?

Robert took the written notice from the envelope. It was from his employer of more than twenty years. What he read on that page brought tears to his eyes—and they were not happy tears. He had been laid off, with no immediate prospects of returning to work or of getting another job.

With a heavy heart, this faithful employee laid the letter down and rose to go tell his wife and children the bad news. What would he do? Where would he turn?

It was a painful situation as he shared the news with his family. But what happened next? Did Robert panic? Did his wife collapse? Did the children run away? No! Robert gathered his family around him as they knelt and prayed. Although they were all disappointed and wished this hadn’t happened—it had. What would happen now? Let’s listen in on what Robert and his family prayed that night:

"Dear heavenly Father, we come to You tonight with sadness and fear but also with joy. We don’t know what to do, but we know that You are sovereign and we know that You love us. We know that You will provide. Help us not to despair in this situation. Help us to trust in You and cast all our cares upon You. Help us to rejoice in You, no matter what our circumstances are. We love You, and we delight in You. Please show us Your way. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen."

We find a mixture of emotions in Robert and his family members. There is fear, but it is mixed with faith in God. There is sadness, but it is mixed with gladness. There is sorrow, but it is mixed with joy.

Do you have joy—real joy? How would you define it? What is true joy, according to God and the Bible?

Hollywood would probably define joy as a bubbly, happy feeling that makes you jump up and down and say yippee! Madison Avenue and the huge advertising agencies of the world would say that joy is to be found in purchasing one of their products, such as a new car, a new toy, or a new hairdo. Many people would say that you can find joy only when you do whatever makes you feel good, whether its legal and moral or not.

The Bible uses different words for our English word joy. It will be my aim to examine joy in light of what the Bible has to say about it, but I’m not going to go through a precise language study on the word. Instead, I’d like to suggest the following definition.

    Joy Is Delight!

I’m defining Christian joy as a deep and abiding delight in God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. This joy is especially focused on Jesus Christ as you meditate on Him through the Scriptures. He is the object of your delight, He is the author of joy, and He is the source of your strength, as Nehemiah 8:10 tells us: "Do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength."

We delight in God because he has saved us from sin and death. He has saved us from just condemnation because of our sin and rebellion against Him. Jesus Christ was born of a virgin, born without sin. He
