Cries of, "Panee lao!" got Mehta’s attention.  The call for water was nearly constant on the front lines.  It was more for the gigantic, steam powered, mechanical devices that the English used, than for the men themselves  The walkers, as they were called, recovered quite a bit of the water they used, but there was always some loss.  Refilling them, even though it be from the sacred Ganges itself, seemed like an unending task.

While he was more than a bhisti, a simple water carrier, all hands needed to be on deck when soldiers where in the field.  Refilling water was the first and most important priority, but guns needed powder, armor needed patching, and exhausted soldiers needed to be unbuttoned from their walkers to be replaced be fresh men.  There were three soldiers for every suit in the cavalry since one man couldn’t stand more than an hour being cooped up in the hot metal cylinders.

When things cooled down he was able to perform repair and maintenance on the gears, cogs, springs, and other moving parts that made them work.  His efforts were rewarded with the slaughter of scores of his countrymen.  He carried no small amount of guilt and shame for serving in this capacity, but it was either this or die.  He was not ready to die just yet.  When he did, he would be sure to make it count.

The heat from the boiler of the last walker he worked on nearly blistered his skin.  Once its reservoir was full he shouted to the pilot inside.

Too bloody slow Mehta.  I’ll marrow you, ‘f you don’t move a bit faster next time.  The voice sounded inhuman, coming from the metallic grate.

    Mehta simply nodded, reasonably sure
