Prologue
Until the temperature changed, it was a usual summer’s day. But then, wind picked up and a nosy gust pushed through a wide crack in the crumbly foundation that still managed to hold up an old house atop Karnberry Hill. As it moved through a narrow crawlspace beneath the sagging floor, a flutter of air brushed against an elegant weave of silky thread and the spiraled web shimmered in the dim light.
There was a chill in the air, but that didn’t bother the yellow spinspider. She’d seen worse.
Winter,
she often noted with a shudder at the thought. Now that really puts a chill in the air!
Winter was a ways off, yet. Still, there’s no harm remaining alert. That’s why the spider was busy tending a sticky snare that draped to the dusty floor like heavy silk curtains. When finished, she darted through the crawlspace to the next web needing her attention. Quick to mend what was needed, she added more silk for strength, and laid down framework in her mind for a new web she planned for the back wall.
She wasn’t like other spiders that build webs outdoors where insects are plentiful. No. This yellow spinspider didn’t like dealing with the whims of weather. That’s why she built her traps beneath the old house. It meant fewer opportunities for snaring meals, but she was willing to take that risk for the sake of never getting rained on.
She hated getting wet!
The cooler air that moved through the crawlspace had the spinspider thinking how lucky she’d be if a few crickidids still hung around by the time winter sets in. Usually they don’t. For that reason, it was always important to keep a store of meals on hand should things get tight. That’s why she was always on the hunt.
Earlier, the yellow spinspider felt familiar vibrations of panic struggling in her web. It was another meal! She just knew it was something special when she hurried across the silky strands to have a glimpse. When she saw the prize, she did what spiders rarely do—smile.
There, pulling against a strand of sticky silk was the biggest ‘Gotcha!’ of all catches—a rare tomebeetle!
She had work was cut out for her, she did. Preparation alone was going to take forever. But when the aging was complete, the beetle would add up to a lot of meals. So, like she did with every luckless victim to sashay into her traps unawares, the spider started wrapping that beetle with lots and lots of sticky silk and planned where to hang her handiwork for later.
However, what seemed like a wonderful stroke of luck, didn’t exactly work out as the spinspider might have hoped.
No doubt, the tomebeetle was plenty scared to think how he was about to end up a meal. Like they all do, he squirmed and pleaded to be set free with the usual gush of
