About this ebook

Marley loved the smell of Perchmire Swamp. It’s why the muckerrat built a cozy den so near the muddy waters. First to report the strange lights, he only spoke of them briefly, and not once after did he mention them again. He might have had the luxury of forgetting had events not changed the possibility.
The lights were flickering again, and only he knew why.

    Prologue

A watery nightmare chased the yellow spinspider across the narrow crawlspace that lay beneath an old abandoned house. It was cold and creepy and methodically followed as she fled up a sticky web that was attached to the sagging floor above her head. She climbed as high as she dared, and when there no more room to run, she opened her many spider eyes and realized it was only a dream.

Beneath the sagging floorboards of an old abandoned house that sat atop Karnberry Hill, a yellow spinspider was feeling poorly. Her head hurt something awful!

Awake at the first crack of dawn, she had every intention of doing what spiders do so well. But for the first time ever, she wasn’t feeling up to the chore of mending an array of webs she had weaved to catch meals.

It all began the day before when a rainstorm moved through the sky over Karnberry Hill. A deluge of water found a way into the crawlspace through a crack in the old house’s crumbly foundation. To her spidery dismay, the weight of so much water clung to the silky webs and a few were pulled down. Fortunately, most were intact. Yet, she was a spider and the slightest imperfection was hard to swallow because even one thread out of place was potential for tragedy in her mind’s many spider eyes. For that reason alone, each sticky snare needed her attention.

But picky spider ways didn’t give her a headache, no sir, nor was it the chill that came with the storm that would seem to be the culprit that grumbled in her sour stomach all morning. No, it came from somewhere else.

Just after she had finished dining on a surprise of scatterbugs that had flown into one of her webs that morning, her belly was pleasantly full and she was ready for an early nap. Only, just as she closed her many spider eyes, she felt a familiar tug from one of her snares. Thoughts of sleeping off a good meal went by the wayside as she hurried to investigate. There, helplessly struggling in one of her sticky webs was a most unusual surprise—a large rare tomebeetle.

Because her belly was already full it made sense to do what a spider does so well. She envisioned the many meals that would come of the catch and wrapped strand after strand of sticky silk around the beetle as he squirmed and protested. With each bit of struggle, he was ensnared even more and before long she was able to wrap him with ease.

Unfortunately, she never got around to finishing what a spider never leaves undone.

Before she could complete her task to properly wrap the tomebeetle so he would be ready to cure with the other meals hanging in the crawlspace, the spinspider noticed a book in a tattered pack that the beetle carried and curiosity interrupted her usual spider habits.

Called Tales of Tossledowns, the book was a collection of stories about the beetle’s travels. At first she was
