GEORGE GOES FOR A WALK
Published in Knight Literary Journal, Volume 2 (2004), Virginia, USA
On this slightly smoggy Southern California morning, dew on the cars and the short dry grass, George opens the scratched aluminum screen door of his wood frame stucco house, like he has for twenty years. A day like any other Long Beach day, and yet, for unsuspecting George, a surprise just around the corner. Something unexpected to disrupt the comfortable unease of his settled life. A thin cell phone in his palm chirps as he dials a ten-digit number. It’s Saturday, and he steps down each wooden, paint-peeling step off the porch, wearing what he wore yesterday: slacks, a belt, wing tips, a crumpled white shirt, and something Weekend: his fuzzy blue sweater, the one the cats were sleeping on in the chair this morning. Today, no tie. He’s on a Joe Job to pick up milk, bread, coffee and cigarettes at JP Liquor Store on South Street, the main drag in the top of the town
.
Don’t be askin’ me to pick up anything exotic like endive or tofu,
he barks back at Helen, who sits cross-legged on the kitchen chair reading a thick paperback. Then inwardly, as the screen slowly inches shut behind him, never, under any circumstances send me on a hunt for a
feminine hygiene product.
He laughs at his own borrowed wit as he steps onto the bumpy concrete walk. He notices the cracks, the mini earthquakes, the heaved blocks, the crab grass in the raised dirt, and wonders when his share of taxes are going to filter down to improve his neighborhood. His foot crunches on a maple seed pod; spiked shells are littered everywhere. A busy signal buzzes in his ear. Ollie’s low slung shiny yellow ‘74 Oldsmobile rolls past, rubber tires making a soft sound against the asphalt. George folds his cell phone into a flat deck of cards and slips it into his shirt pocket.
California Street is aptly named for this kind of crisp, sunny, winter day. It’s not an upscale neighborhood, but its small yards are well trimmed, the palm trees are 70 feet tall and in the spring, maple trees, now without their leaves, fill in with a grace
