About this ebook

A charming short story, set in Regency London. Since the moment Lord Sebastian Byefield’s pretty new neighbor moved in, he hasn’t enjoyed a single night of restful sleep. He blames her for the unearthly sounds that keep him awake at night and sour his mood during the day. But when he finally meets her one crisp autumn afternoon, she is nothing like he imagined she’d be.

Miss Amelia Merriweather, the free-thinking new resident of the townhouse next door, is rescuing her kitten from a tree when she meets Lord Byefield. She’s pleasantly surprised to find he is just as handsome as he is serious . . . and that he’s just as puzzled as she is by the source of the ghostly noises that keep her awake every night.

The only way they’ll ever solve the mystery is to join forces and search together for the cause of those sinister sounds. Of course, their search would go much smoother if Amelia’s kitten didn’t keep getting in the way. It’s almost as if the impish little kitten were possessed of a matchmaking spirit intent of bringing Sebastian and Amelia together.

A Bewitching Minx

Chapter One

Sebastian Camerford, Lord Byefield looked into her eyes and knew he could not resist her. He had never been able to refuse her anything; not when she looked at him just so, with the light of anticipation in her eyes; not when she looked at him with that soft expression of pleading that had the power to melt his resolve as nothing else on earth could.

He should have scolded her. He should have explained to her in no uncertain terms that no female of his acquaintance was ever allowed to disrupt the solitude of his library. He should have told her how audacious and unladylike she was for daring to sit on his desktop, bringing her head level with his, looking him straight in the eye, as if she thought by doing so she could bend him to her will.

He should have done all those things, but he didn't. Instead, his stern, gray eyes met her blue eyes and he forced his brows together in a slight frown. A kitten? he repeated, discouragingly.

His gruff demeanor didn't fool her for a moment. She smiled slightly and returned his gaze with wide, unblinking eyes. Yes, Uncle.

And what, may I ask, makes you think I wish to spend my afternoon looking for a stray kitten?

Because it is the dearest little thing, she responded, with all the reasoning of a five-year-old. I found it in your garden earlier and Mama said I might keep it, but when I tried to dress it properly for tea, it scampered away and I cannot find it anywhere!

Since Sebastian was well acquainted with his niece's penchant for dressing in human attire any animal unfortunate enough to come within her orbit, it came as no surprise to him that one of the poor creatures had tried to escape. The kitten sounds a very ill-mannered guest. Perhaps you should consider having your tea without it, Mary.

No, Uncle, I cannot. There was the merest trace of a pout about her lips. "Truly, it is the prettiest little kitten I have ever seen, with white hair and blue eyes. I've never seen a kitten with blue eyes before, so I know it must be very special. Please help me find it. Please?"

Her voice held that pleading tone again; the same tone that, in one fell swoop, held the power to make him abandon all his plans for the afternoon and believe with all his heart that nothing was as important at that very moment as finding a kitten possessed of white hair and blue eyes.

Mary, if I help you find the kitten—

She gasped with delight.

"—I said if I help you find the kitten—will you be a good little girl and be kind to it?"

She nodded vigorously.

You musn't force it to wear your stockings and shawls if it doesn't wish to. Do I have your promise?

I promise, Uncle!

The last of his resolve melted away. Very well, I shall help you find your kitten— He stopped short as Mary threw her chubby arms about his neck and almost choked him with affection. He held her briefly, then stepped back to wag an admonishing finger at her. If you find the kitten before I do, you must take care not to frighten it. Do you understand?

Oh, yes, for frightened kittens scratch. Mama told me so.

Your mother is correct. Now, where was the kitten when last you saw it?

I was trying to carry it up the stairs but it jumped out of my arms as quick as lightening! It ran toward the blue salon, I think.

The blue salon boasted several pairs of tall glass doors that gave out onto a small terrace at the back of the house. That autumn afternoon the doors had been left open to allow the room to air. Sebastian frowned slightly. I fear your kitten could be anywhere. I suggest you search the house while I search the gardens.

Could we not find the kitten together? asked Mary, slipping her small hand hopefully into his.

We could, but I think we shall find it that much sooner if we divide our efforts.

Very well, said Mary, releasing her hold on him. She hopped down from her perch upon his desk and went to the library door, but paused just before opening it. I shall search the old schoolroom. The kitten might be there playing with the toys.

He smothered a smile and said, with perfect sincerity, A logical course of action.

She flashed him a bright smile. Very well. I shall call to you if I find her before you!

She was gone in an instant, leaving behind only the sound of her shoes beating a soft tattoo against the hardwood floors as she scampered down the hall toward the stairs.

Sebastian, too, left
