    Will Sterritt held his hand above the mouse. He paused.

    Should I do this? What if they don’t like me? questioned Will silently.

    He put his hand back in his lap and sat a few minutes. He looked around the public library hoping that no one could see what was on the computer screen in front of him. It was an e-mail:

    Subject: The American Author Program

    Will looked at it. He had worked for weeks, collating short stories he had written in his life, revising them, having friends and teachers read them, combining stories, taking the best of here and there, seeking inspiration, and producing lots of perspiration.

    Come on Will, he thought. You have been through this all before. The package is ready. It doesn’t cost anything to send the e-mail.

    Do it Will, came from behind him.

    Sure, replied Will. Do it Will. Nothing to it. I didn’t see you put together an entry for this.

    Not me, friend. I don’t rate, came a 17-year-old voice. "You’re the best. You’re the one. Send it in Will. Besides, what is there to lose? Do it. Hurry up. There are girls outside
