It sat like a trough in a hollow. The fog. His legs were tight and stiff as the sky train led on toward its destination, bobbing and weaving on its track through the darkness. Heading east. The fog he could feel. Damp. Beckoning him. The heaters weren't on. It was supposed to be summer. But summer had long since past leaving him behind. Broken like the heaters. Days into weeks, weeks into months, months into now?
His eyes caught hold of a passing neon sign. Bright letters hanging off a side of a blurry building. Like a beacon. It read: Everything's going to be alright. He tried to smile as the train made it round a corner. The message disappeared too fast. Everything's going to be alright? But he knew it was a lie.
The sun slit through his weary eyes, cutting across the valley making night retreat. Making him even more tired. His last cheque was cashed and debtors were at the door. Bills to pay. Life sucks.
And so it was back to work. Forced labour like some prison camp movie. A recent memory reminded him. He had to take better care of himself. Stop the drinking. No more stumbling in the wee hours into his rented bachelor's, empty-handed. No more writing for a while either. The development dollars had dried up long before his words.
So now he found himself on the long journey back to a soft middle. Nowhere with nothing. Tender. Worn and bruised. Battle-scarred. Like his heart that long ago had been broken into too many forgotten pieces. Left behind where it
