    Chapter One

Slapping at the alarm clock to still the annoying buzz, Audra Jacob opened her eyes and breathed a tired sigh. As usual, she’d woken exhausted. Even after two years, the look on the face of the teenager who’d killed her husband haunted her dreams.

After she showered and dressed in jeans and a soft pink T-shirt, Audra combed her hair into a bun and applied her modest make-up. Downstairs, the aroma of rich, fragrant coffee welcomed her into the kitchen, and she slurped the hot liquid with delight as its magic began to wake her. Looking out into her mother's small garden, she was glad her mother had taken her in after her husband’s death, and the job she’d found cleaning at Maddox Industries had given her a much needed fresh start.

Cain Maddox—rich and sexy, sweet yet a bit dark—had amazing appeal with raven black hair and piercing blue-gray eyes that seemed to look into her soul. He was the most handsome man she had ever seen, but thinking about it always made her feel guilty, as if she dishonored Finley’s memory. Still, working for Mr. Maddox had become an important part of her life. The job provided a comfortable monotony that made her feel safe.

The temp agency instructed her that discretion was the most important qualification for the job, and she’d signed a manifesto of legal forms as thick as a Bible that swore her to discretion. It was hard not to speculate as to the purpose of his need for privacy, particularly after what must have been the sixtieth page and terrible writer’s cramp in her hand. She assumed he contracted for the government or something like that. In the two years she’d been employed for Mr. Maddox, she’d never seen anything that warranted his privacy paranoia, so she assumed he was just a bit eccentric. Anyone with his bank account had the privilege to have quirks, and, honestly, she found it amusing. He’d hired her on full-time after only a few months, and she’d always be grateful to him. So, she kept her opinions to herself.

Audra peeked into her son Sam’s bedroom before leaving. He was fast asleep. Looking at him made her heart ache with love. She felt blessed to have a caring employer who let her set her own hours, so she was able to be home to pick her little boy up from preschool every day.
