Shirley Owens was the vocalist for this Afro-American girl group, which became the first to have a number one pop hit. Mitch Miller of Columbia Records wanted the tune for his artist, Johnny Mathis, but it was improper for a male to sing the lyric.

      10a. Carol’s classical training led her to write Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow in the style of Beethoven’s, Moonlight Sonota. She and Gerry were unique in combining classical and pop music to create a hit song.

A young Phil Specter often hung around the famous music center seeking songs.

      14a. Don Kirshner, Larry Kohler, Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil, Howie Greenfield, Neil Sedaka and others met and worked at the Brill building to compose and sell songs.

      15a. Barry Mann was Barry Imbermann.  Barry had some piano but was not as accomplished as others. He tried school but didn’t have an interest in it.  He would give songwriting a try until he thought of something better.  He grew up in the city but longed for the wide open spaces of the West.  He wore a cowboy hat and boots and seemed out of place in New York.
