U.N.I.Q.U.E. KIDS: Growing My Leadership Garden
()
About this ebook
Using the classic teaching tools of fable and metaphor, Debra Slover has created a sweetly illustrated book that empowers children, steers them toward positive patterning, and shows each child how to plant and nurture the seeds of good leadership while ridding their metaphorical gardens of the "weeds" (negative qualities that can harm children's self-esteem).
The main character, a sheep named Hugh, suffers from low self-esteem, stemming from an environment where he was often criticized and never appreciated. When he stumbles into Leadership Farm, where a more open and loving way of being is the norm, he learns from human farm staffers Leda and Aristotle, as well as other animals like Annabelle the dog, Blossom the cow, and Robert the rooster, how to develop his own leadership qualities, and how to tend his own Leadership Garden.
A central mnemonic is the acronym, U.N.I.Q.U.E.: Understanding, Nurturing, Inventive, Quality, Unstoppable, Expression. Taking one letter at a time, Slover walks the reader through creating and encouraging the life-affirming, esteem-building, leadership skills characteristic, and harnessing the six qualities together to form a "Leadership Garden Legacy" based on mutual respect, cooperation, teamwork, and other values. Kids who've been bullied may respond especially well.
U.N.I.Q.U.E. Kids is designed as a learning aid with the active participation of grownups who can read the book with a child (8-12) and provide mentoring and reinforcement in its concepts. Grandparents particularly enjoy using the book as a way to take an active role in developing their grandchildren's leadership potential.

INTRODUCTION
Message to Adults:
U.N.I.Q.U.E. KIDS: Growing My Leadership Garden will help you nurture and grow the unique leader within each child.
Written for 8–12 year-olds, the story is a fable of the lost sheep, Hugh. Representing the human heart, mind, and spirit, he wanders onto the Leadership Farm. There, he learns how to become a courageous leader with a unique purpose and aim. He discovers that all plants have a primary shoot called a leader, which eventually blooms. Like plants, each child is a leader waiting to blossom.
This book is an adaptation of the adult book and audio book U.N.I.Q.U.E.: Growing the Leader Within, and companion workbook called The Leadership Garden Guidebook: Cultivating organic experiences, actions, and results that empower you and those around you.
Each chapter’s human message is contained in the lesson boxes and the discussion questions at the end. It is an ideal book to be read aloud and discussed over eight sessions at home, in school, or in youth groups.
In the human garden, leadership development begins at home, and extends throughout a child’s school years. Though told as a fable, the lessons contained are real.
Love is at the heart of Leadership Gardens that use these six leader-friendly gardening practices:
• Be nonjudgmental
• Do not enable
• Use empathy
• Prune gossip
• Eliminate blame
• Eradicate victimization
Imagine a world where these are the norm. These practices are the core of the Leadership Garden Legacy that this book supports. Our goal is to seed and nurture 11 million Leadership Gardens by 11/11/11. In doing so, we hope to help make the world a better place to grow, work, and play.

LEADERSHIP GARDEN
Early one spring morning, Leda—a kind and passionate gardener—sat on her back porch sipping tea. A cool breeze blew through her hair. I love this season. It is a time of hope and growth.
