About this ebook

My first book is a collection of 119 poems - some long, some short, some haiku - that I have written on various subjects over the years. They range from serious to funny, covering subjects from the everyday to philosophy or the abstract. Some are snippets from the lives of imaginary characters or just ideas or reflections on nature. The book is structured under eight themes: figures; nature; abstracts; love; haiku; creatures; childhood and darkwave.

"Wow! This author writes beautiful words. I enjoyed each & every poem, I found myself turning page after page to read the next & the next. More of the same please!" (Smashwords review by wistfulskimmie, May 2011)

    Kaleidoscope - Vickie Johnstone

    Figures

    We ride in cars

    Slow to ride

    Our comic days

    All drowned in wine

    In the stifling heat

    We ride in cars

    With windows down

    Singing to strangers

    Who cannot sing

    Hold the tune

    Against the summer breeze

    With the dog’s head bobbing

    He laps it up

    The speeding cars

    And the lingering lights

    The ripped out trees

    Shouting our sights

    We ride in cars

    Chase the tyre tracks

    From dawn til dusk

    Holding our fire back

    We scream and laugh

    In the silencing

    As the dark draws near

    And pretend to sleep

    Keep the fires burning

    As the dog nods on

    In the piercing light

    Of the summer sun

    Ferris wheel

Sticky sweet rose smell of candyfloss

Feet sinking in the rain-fed mud

Candied apples that threaten your teeth

Sit among rows of bright candy bars

The waltzer spins in a whirl of colour

    Flashing past screams and laughter

While the freaks in the ghost train

    Stagger in the dark-lit passages

Throwing their hands in scared faces

Riding past on the bumps and grinds

We stagger around the fun house

    Creeping up the dizzying slopes

    Peeking into stretched crazy mirrors

That make giants out of little girls

    Wobbling out across the field

    In between the smiling masses

    Music lurches between the dodgems

    Smashing metal to and fro

And so we board the Ferris wheel

Sit awkwardly in the jiggling chairs

It seems too fragile to hold us

But up she goes, round and round

    Creaking and shaking our bones

Above the scream of the fairground

Reaching for the clouds we stare

Out across the dark night sky

Lit with a wave of iridescent hues

Rain-fuelled and hazy in the chill

We breathe in the cold night air

    Giggling through chattering teeth

Rocking back and forth in the wind

We listen to old songs floating up

Wishing we could stay up for ever

And never ever come back down

    Rainbows

    Come and play

    Chase away

    All the dark things

    That crawl in

    Between the walls

    Endless spaces

    Every day drawn

    Sketch a new way

    To see the same thing

    Come and stay

    Chase away

    All the dark things

    And wear again

    This same skin

    Drown me here

    In bright flowers

    Covering me

    Everything reborn

    All this in between

    Brightest rainbows

    Pink hair

She stares out of the window

    The girl with pink hair

    At the rain cascading

    Trickling down the pane

    In swirls of patterns

    Remembering

A bad date in a smoky room

    With an old jukebox

    Playing Zeppelin songs

    Drinking a yellowing ale

    That tasted of honey.

    The night lasted too long

    The ale not long enough

    And Zeppelin faded out

    In the stale conversation.

    What to say

    To someone not listening?

    The room so oppressive

    Red walls closing in.

    She wanted to dance

    Right there on the table

Just to shake up the night

    And slice the boredom

    But her date rattled on

    About the latest footie match

    Or people she didn’t know

    Who had a strange cat.

    The rain spills on

    While this old bus rattles

    Speeding through choking traffic

A chortled haze of muffled fumes

    Breathing in the silencing

Where have all the people gone?

    Lines of endless cars

    Breaking, hooting, baying.

May as well howl at the moon

    For something different

In this sheer haze of days

    So endlessly torn.

She stares out of the window

    The girl with pink hair

    Her
