    Anger Management

These damn writer’s conferences, they’re expensive as hell!

Harry Houghton angrily waved his entry pass at the demure looking girl standing at the entrance to Tupperware Convention Center Auditorium. She cringed as Harry thrust his ticket into her open hand waiting impatiently only long enough for her to punch a hole in the upper left corner.

She wiped the sweat off her forehead with the back of her arm and pulled at the spaghetti straps of her blue and white flowered summer dress, already sticking to her as the steamy July day began to unfold in Kissimmee, Florida.

The next person in line grimaced as they both watched Harry fling the aluminum framed glass door open and huff his way inside.

Looks like it’s going to be another fun one. She smiled and punched the person’s ticket.

Harry was on a mission. Draped across his shoulder, his HP Netbook bag bounced around on his hip and lower back as he shot across the first floor promenade and headed directly for the auditorium. He glanced at his watch, lifting his left arm holding his brown vinyl briefcase stuffed with manuscripts only to confirm what he already knew; he was late for the keynote address of the day.

Harry leaned into the panic bar of the wooden double entry doors with his left side and tried to kick the door open with his right foot. The end result was that he spilled into the rear of the auditorium like a busted bag of pinto beans. His cheap briefcase burst open and papers flew everywhere as Harry landed face first on the burgundy carpet. One of his imitation Italian loafers flew off and bounced off the shoulder of a rather large lady in a wheelchair sitting behind the last row of auditorium seats. She just glared at him and turned her attention back to the speaker on stage.

Scrambling to his feet Harry retrieved his shoe, offered a terse and completely insincere apology and gathered up his scattered papers noting that no one made a move to help.

Selfish little pea-brains! Harry muttered. I’ll betcha if I was James Patterson they’d all be beggin’ to pick up my papers for me!

Harry had a full schedule for the weekend. He journeyed all the way from his non-descript, tiny, one bedroom apartment in Albany, Oregon on a self-proclaimed fact-finding, life-altering mission. Scraping together all the money he could out of his meager earnings as a fast food restaurant janitor he had charged himself with coming to Florida to find out once and for all why he could not get any of his writing accepted by agents or publishing houses.

I can’t figure it Jake! I’m a damn good writer. I can write as good as any of them, better even!

Jake Tolson, quite possibly Harry’s only real friend, nodded in unenthusiastic agreement as he pulled on his steaming black coffee at Pop’s Branding Iron, their habitual meeting place.

I knows it Harry, I seen some of yer work. It ain’t bad at all.

Harry glared at Jake, not really sure if his good-natured friend had tucked a compliment in there.

Not bad? There’s some damn good stuff in there Jake! Harry pointed at the
