    Book One: Emerging

    1.

Wake up sleepy-head. My mom’s voice came through the door like a hammer. You’re going to be late if you don’t get a move on. How could it possibly be morning already? Another sleepless night. Why can’t some people just exist being awake at night and asleep during the day? I’m sure there are enough of us to have entire school schedules and activities in a night time world.

I’m up! I’m up. Two more months of school – two months and four days, but who’s counting, right? Just close my eyes for a little bit, I don’t really need a shower today…

Honey, really. You’re too old to have to have me coming in here every five minutes to get you out of bed. Up, up, up, your breakfast’s upstairs.

Okay. I can’t handle giving her a hard time. She does everything and works so hard. God help me if I’m ever a single mother, or a mother at all for that matter. My kids would be the only ones living like raccoons, running around all night with a crazy night owl mom.

There was a rapping on the window next to my bed. Veronica. Veronica!

Our house was about a hundred years old. The windows had old brass fixtures and elbows that made them open outward. I swung the window open. Oh my God, Skinner, you are such a freak! Skinner and I have been friends forever. Born and raised right here in the most exciting place on Earth – Guerneville, CA. He is constantly abusing the fact that we’re next door neighbors, well, four door down neighbors, to pop up in my window whenever he feels like it. Skinner, you look terrible. He did - his way too freckly face was pale and his always a mess blond hair was making the dark circles under his eyes stand out.

Yeah, whatever. Listen, I’m skipping today, can you bring my homework back?

You can’t keep skipping you know, your grades aren’t good enough. Why can’t you just deal like the rest of us?

Right. Well I have to. So. Can you, please?

Yeah, you know I will. Really, what’s up? You’re acting all excited or weird or something. Are you actually sick – you look like it.

Thanks, V, I can always count on you to make me feel fantastic.

Oh, skinny, you know I love you. Listen, I am so freaking late, I’ll see you when I bring your homework over –get some sleep! And hey - texting works. Gotta go! With that I shut my blinds and turned to the mirror. My hair is literally possessed by the devil. Half of it is curlyish and the other doesn’t even know and it’s this indescribable shade of red. ‘Your hair is amazing Veronica, like an auburn copper penny’. My mom’s voice always pops into my head just when I feel like I want to pull it all out! People are just so focused on it – all my life, like it’s the only thing. I wish they had to give me money every time they brought it up – I’d be a millionaire.

Veronica! Please child! Okay back to reality. Jeans, hooded sweatshirt, Uggs. Ready. I live in a place that is just damp. Like all the time, even in the summer – damp. I guess it’s all the redwood trees. So getting ready is never really a problem, the key is warmth. And I live in California, go figure. Is Skinner picking you up?

    No, he’s, um, sick today…

Gosh, he’s been sick a lot lately, is he okay?

Yeah, I don’t think it’s anything – we’d better go – don’t wanna be late! I grabbed my backpack and bounded down the stairs to the road. Sometime ago when this town was being formed, someone decided that it would be a fantastic idea to build every house on the side of a steep hill so that you’d have a million stairs to climb to get to your front door.

Honey, you know I don’t want to have to be on your case all the time, but, really, do we need to go back to a bedtime? We were starting the drive down our incredibly insane winding road into town in our car, the car, a huge ancient SUV that always feels like an out of control careening boat. Even though I turned sixteen like forever ago, well four months ago, I never really get to actually use my license since my mom needs the car most of the time for work and other mom things. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to deal with this road anyway.
