As an author I the stories I write are ones I want to read. Having grown up in the Black and White movie days I saw every black and white Horror film, Detective Story and war movie I could. The Thin Man, Kansas City Connection, Maltese Falcon, Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Original Thing, the Day the Earth Stood Still, D-Day, Iwo Jima, Rhodan, Godzilla, just to name a few. I devoured books about American history. My first published story in 1968, “Temple in the Swamp”, a H. P. Lovecraft like tale, which might have been the start of my zombie phase. I enjoy writing stories that I would like to read. Currently I have published three novels: “Alien Madness” a science fiction tale, “Unholy War: the Brandenburgers—Russia 41” an alternative history-fantasy, and “Beyond the Wall” a historical adventure set in 168 AD in Scotland. I currently have a series of stories about Shane Eiland, Elf Detective called “Sum Yung Gye” and “The Case of the Missing Husband”. These are Noir style mysteries with a super hero flavor are my favorites and I hope the reader will enjoy them to.

    Fiery Knights

    Prolog

In the story Fiery Knights mankind has colonized and spread out in space. This was a time of great energy, expansion, and exploration until the Plague. The Plague started when space debris crashed into a planet New Georgia.

A virus contained inside one of the meteors spread mutating humans into undead. Once the infection started New Georgia was quarantine from the surrounding worlds. Starships maintained a blockage, not allowing travel in or out for fear of the plague.

Supplies and goods could be dropped in, but no one could leave or enter. Still under the pressure of an Apocalyptic War the Government collapsed. Those uninfected turned to the only organization left, the Church.

Needing to fight the menace and cleanse the planet Church leaders dug deep in their historical records. They formed military orders modeled after the Middle Ages of Earth. Knighthood was revived from the faithful who would swear to defend the faith and rid New Georgia from the plague.

Each knight carried a symbol of his office, a sword.

    A Babysitting Job

    Sir James.

That was me. It was good to be an officer even though my sister the Bishop had bought me a commission.

Take you lance (squad) to the airport and escort a group of Inquisitors back to the Capitol. James, your men have seen heavy action and you’re short three men. The training academy has sent over a replacement engineer as well. Base Commander Jones said.

No sweat, three-hour flights back to civilization with all of its fleshy temptations. I can handle it. I called my lance together. As I looked over my knights my spirits rose, Orestes, was a Templar like me at least two of us know how to fight. Besides Orestes, most of my knights were from the Order of the Sacred Flame. Leroy my Leroy/sniper looked every bit as competent as his 401D log said he was. My Chaplin, Luke smiled at me, after all chaplains were supposed to be friendly and I was a senior knight appointed by the bishop herself. Some might think this due in no small part to our being brother and sister, but I believed her to be totally unbiased in my case.

My driver was a somber man--I can’t remember his name. He just saluted. Our last man was the newbie, the engineer Artemis. I could tell from his stare he was wary of Templers. I’ll need to work on that.

When we arrived at the airport I ordered Leroy to find a good spot and set up. It never hurt to have someone watching over you and with his record I felt pretty secure. The rest of us sat in one of those non-descript food areas and waited. With no immediate action expected we carried our armor and headgear in duffle bags. Our side arms and swords were belted on. So we waited. I was about to call my boss Commander Jones and ask him if I had the orders wrong when the Inquisitors showed up.

As they walked out of the entrance hall I thought they looked like a mob of fans around a rock star, no discipline, none at all. Their gaudy blood red robes were awful. They looked showy and their faces displayed a practiced arrogance for the rest of us. But who likes the secret police? Boy this was going to be a real treat.

They walked right past us and didn’t even look our way and headed out to the shuttle. I said, Let’s go. Seems our babysitting mission has arrived. The squad laughed and grabbed their gear.

We followed out about twenty meters or so behind them not wanting to disturb them with our mundane martial appearance. Ground crews ahead of us were prepping the passenger shuttle on the runway, its exit ramp down for easy access. I walked right up behind the last Inquisitor and started to search the cargo bay.

What do you think you are doing? An Inquisitor asked me. His question sounded like he was talking to a child.

    My job, I said.

Useless. I’ve already scanned it. He responded. Like I should take his opinion as holy gospel. Nope I didn’t like his attitude. I wanted to slug him, but restrained myself. It took an effort, for though I am not proud of the fact I am stubborn. Instead, I replied, I need to check. My mission is to escort you SAFELY to the capitol.

He cut me off. You and your knights are just along for the ride. So sit down and shut up.

My hand eased down to where my sword’s hilt. I so wanted to cut him down to size, but I knew the paperwork would be hideous. Beside I could wait; it was a three-hour flight.
