In Houses With Ladders - Roberta Gould

    Anyone Can See

    I'm on Black Mountain

not the one where fame abounded

    accruing when the group

    set it off...new

    style for a day

    I write anyhow

    not that the dog reads

    or God is watching...

    so many wars

    occupy his time

    Still I do it, condense

    a tree in one line

    It straddles a boulder

    over the stream

    flowing fast

    I only suggest it

    expecting you to guess

which is good for the imagination

    And why bother to repeat

what anyone in the world can see?

    The Danger

Sweep down in a violet rush

thick acrylic! Tease the black poplar

that is starved, threatened by every light color

converged from the sea of the sky

Add your long teeth to the danger

the brilliant hint of flame behind its high glob

will transform when rocks start to rumble

and the earth, tilted in orbit, straightens up

    Shared Dwelling

Horses used to live in your house

    A black and white pair

nuzzled each other painted on the bricks

    outside your top windows

    and six large letters

    spelling HORSES

over what is now the garage

were a sign to allto board their fruit-cart nags

or the steeds they rode between towns

Now the facade has been redone

and if there were no neighing in your sleep

    even you would not suspect

the years of shelter they took under your roof

    when you were invisible

    as now they are

alive in the stable of your dreams

    The Slave Quarters

    Port Au Prince, Haiti. 1998

    Behind the curtained
