Chapter One
Holy shit, what was that noise?
Jonathan had just taken his eyes off the road and something had hit his rental car. It was getting late and he had a couple of drinks from the conference he was attending at the Salt Lake City, Utah convention center. He was an Engineer with the Hewlett-Packard, and he was a delegate from the company. The meeting was hosted by Novell and they did that once a year to get all the techie guys together for some fun and games, and of course, some study sessions thrown in, to prepare the guys to help them pass their certification classes.
When looking for a job as a network administrator at any of the multitude of companies that employed Novell Netware as their primary server software, these certifications added value to their resumes. Novell was riding high those days and Microsoft had to play catch up, and finally Microsoft was able to unseat Novell as the primary provider of server software.
Jonathan looked around and it was pretty dark. No one was around and the streets were practically deserted too. Upon closer examination of his car, Jonathan noticed that he had air in all his tires, so it was not a flat. He was always worried about having a flat, especially on a deserted road like this. May be he had hit an opossum or something, thought Jonathan. He was about to get back in the car and at that very moment, he heard a little moan coming from the right side of the road.
Jonathan slowly approached that corner, ready to bolt and noticed that it sure was a young girl, probably a teenager, very beautiful with an angelic face. No broken wings or long white feathers were visible anywhere, confirming Jonathan’s suspicion all along that she sure was probably human. As a kid, he used to watch the popular show, ‘bewitched’ on TV and he always wished for a witch for his assistant. He could always use some help from trusted lieutenant with magical powers to shuffle his tight schedules around, and provide him company when he is lonely, especially over weekends. That’s when he wished if he had a family. All other days are filled with work, work and more work! Not one dull moment to ponder over.
Jonathan was relieved to notice that the young beauty was actually wearing earthly clothes; a light brown jacket on top of her pinkish blouse, which seemed to have saved her from scraping her skin. Around her neck, a tiny silver chain, with a golden cross dangling from it was glimmering in the night light. She was wearing thick Jeans and sneakers.
Jonathan thought of bolting from the accident scene to save his skin, but on closer look, the girl was not bleeding and all her anatomical parts seemed to be in place. Her breathing was regular and her pulse seemed to be normal. Her eyes were closed as if in a deep slumber, the heavenly type, if you have ever seen angels sleep, then you are in the right place.
On second thoughts, Jonathan decided to give the girl a little shake. She didn’t move and it was a cold, dark night. He knew that if she didn’t wake up soon, she was probably going to develop hypothermia. It was the winter season and the weather in those parts of Utah was quite unpredictable most of the time.
Hey little angel, can you hear me?
Jonathan tried to wake the girl, but nothing. So he put her in the back of his car and drove off back towards his hotel. After a few miles, through the rear-view mirror, Jonathan noticed that the girl had woken up and she was trying to figure out where exactly she was. Jonathan stopped the car on the side of the road and asked her if she was okay?
Yes, I am, but who are you and where are you taking me?
Wherever you want to go sweetie, I am just giving you a ride
"Where did you find me? The girl asked Jonathan.
You were freezing your butt off on the side of the road. I didn’t want you dying there, so I just gave you a ride to some place safe, where you can stay warm and call your parents to pick you up or something. I heard over the radio that it might get down to freezing tonight. I can take you home, do you live nearby?
No Sir, that won’t be necessary. Just drop me at the bus stand.
Drop you at the bus stand? That’s no place for a young lady like you. I hear there are pimps constantly prowling bus stands and train stations for young girls like you. They will kidnap you and lock you up until you agree to do whatever they want you to do. I didn’t tell you this to scare you, but to warn you about the world out there. So tell me, where exactly are you headed for?
Nowhere in particular; I’m just running away from my home. Not really my home, I am living with these folks who took me in, when my parents passed away.
Jonathan knew very well that running away from home meant a lot of trouble. She is basically an orphan, and once she disappears, they will be looking for her. Jonathan was not in any condition for embracing trouble, especially for harboring an underage cutie.

Chapter Two
What’s your name, Miss? If you don’t mind telling me; I am Jonathan
It’s Amber, nice to meet you Sir, and thanks for giving me a lift.
So, Amber, let me get this one straight, if you are running away from home, where are you going to?
No one in particular, I don’t have anyone and I have no place to go.
Then, what’s the point in going to the bus station?
I really don’t know. I haven’t planned anything. I just wanted to get away, long enough to think about what I can do, until I become eighteen. Then I don’t have to answer to anyone, and I could take care of myself.
Good thinking, anyway, Amber, I am hungry, how about you? Can I buy you some dinner and then we can talk about it in the comfort of the restaurant. If it’s the bus station that you want to go, then I will drop you there afterwards, but we need to think what’s best for you, before you make that giant leap.
Sure, let’s eat. I haven’t had a good meal after my parents died. I see that I haven’t thought this thing through.
They both went inside a restaurant and ordered as soon as the waiter arrived with the menu. Amber went inside the restroom to clean up, and later, over desert, Amber had to decide what she needed to do. She was in no mood to go back until she thought it through. She also knew that, if she went back, it would be much harder to break out of there. They were really mean people and who would want to lose a slave, especially when they didn’t have to pay for her services, except provide her with leftovers from their dinner table?
So, Mister, you have a wife and kids?
Amber wanted to know who she was dealing with.
Please call me Jonathan, and no I am not married right now, and no, I don’t have any kids. My ‘Ex’ didn’t want any and it was a disaster. Well, it’s over now and I am a free man, to do whatever I want to do, with whomsoever I want to do it with!
"Can you do me a favor Jonathan? Let me stay with you and I will decide what to do in the morning. I am tired, and right now, I
