    Chapter One

Kyle shoved both hands deep inside the pockets of his jacket in a lame attempt to keep the October chill and dampness which plagued the night air at bay. He despised the evening shift and the subsequent late night trek home that came with it.

He kept his head down as he passed strangers, wondering why anyone would choose to be out on a night like tonight if they didn’t have to be.

This area of town wasn’t great, but the rent was within his tight budget.

Relief washed over him. He stepped up his pace, realizing that tonight the thugs that often hung out around his building were nowhere to be seen. Perhaps they hated the shitty weather as much as he did.

He turned the last corner and, through the light drizzle and fog, he spotted a man. A sudden chill ripped through him.

The man stood under a streetlight, tall, dressed in a black trench coat. Kyle’s mind told him to run, to just turn and head in the opposite direction. Yet, frozen in place he just stared, knowing the man had already spotted him.

Kyle backed away as he came toward him, his heavy boots thudding against the damp pavement, then he was gone.

Had he imagined him? He turned away for a moment, almost falling into a large puddle when two large hands grabbed him by the shoulders preventing him from hitting the ground.

They stood face to face. The man eyed him in a most peculiar way.

I’m sorry, he said, releasing Kyle, his voice deep, penetrating, as were his dark green eyes. Eyes which shone out from a stark, handsome, alabaster face. His chin, firm and stone-like, carried along with the rest of his features under the light of the now clouded, wet moon.

Thank you, stammered Kyle, his heart pounded inside his chest.

The man’s eyes traced him up and down before coming back to rest on his face.

Kyle fought to remain calm as the stranger stared. He stood much taller than Kyle, his shoulders broad. He exuded strength and dominance without saying a word.

He nodded and backed away into the darkness of the nearby alleyway. Kyle blinked. He was gone.

Another chill raced over Kyle, realizing the drizzle had turned to rain and had started to seep through his jacket.

    ****

The first thing Kyle did when he entered his apartment was strip. Shedding his wet clothes, he slid into a pair of sleep pants and topped it off with a fitted t-shirt. He towel dried his hair and then set forth to brew a pot of coffee.

While he waited for it to brew, he flicked open his cell and turned on the ringer. There were a few texts from Joel. Joel, who was a co-worker and friend, yet couldn’t understand why he wasn’t interested in anything more than friendship from the guy. Kyle did, however, give him two thumbs up for being persistent.

When it came to his own sexuality, it was confusion and lack of self-confidence that prevented him from dating anyone, male or female. Up to this point in life, he had reasoned within his own being that he was most likely gay, yet he wasn’t one hundred percent sure.

Joel had tried to kiss him one night at work in the supply room, and while he wanted it to happen, he held back. They were friends, buddies. He didn’t want anything
