About this ebook

Nearly all of us have been in denial at one time or another. But very few of us have been in a situation involving murder, or a murder victim. "In Denial" is a novel written by Elly Friedman, in which the hero uses such defenses. Not only does this novel incorporate romance, but also mystery, music, and dance as well. Reading it may seduce you into buying her first novel, "Between Two Worlds".

    In Denial - Elly Friedman

    Chapter One

Graham, a young man of 25 to 35 years of age, exited the jail carrying his acoustic guitar in one hand and a duffel bag in the other. He was a pleasant-looking young man, fairly tall. The most striking feature about his face was his blue eyes that seemed to burn into you. He approached Luis, his friend of many years and indeterminate age, who was very good-looking in a sensual way. He too was obviously a man who had been through a lot. They embraced.

Thanks for coming, Graham said, You're a real friend. He paused to look back at the jail. I still can't believe they let me out.

Luis looked at him in a worried fashion; he was clearly puzzled. Are you a free man now, can I carry your bag? After not receiving a reply to either question, Luis reached for the bag, which was sitting in the middle of the road.

Graham finally broke the silence, Yes to both questions.

Luis lifted the bag from the dusty road, Forever? Graham thought a minute, I hope so. But you never can tell. They released me because they didn't have enough evidence to prosecute. In the meantime, the killer is still roaming around. We'll probably learn more about it from the TV.

Graham abruptly looked around in dismay. Where is she?

    Luis asked, Who?

My mom, Graham answered, She didn't want to come.

Why not? Graham looked surprised and then dejected.

I think she's still angry with you. She hasn't said it in so many words, but it seems pretty obvious. That's just my opinion.

You mean she still thinks I murdered Samantha: how could she? exclaimed Graham. He was all choked up and could hardly get the words out. How could she possibly think that?

Luis responded, I don't know. You'll have to ask her the next time you see her.

Okay, so I'll go to the house tomorrow.

    Why not today? Exploded Luis.

Well, I'm just not up to it, said Graham.

She's your mom, for God's sake, Come on! You're disgusting! said Luis.

I feel down enough -- she'll only make me feel worse than I already do, exclaimed Graham.

Luis calmed down, All right then, can I take you home?

Yes, but you can't stay. I want to be alone right now. I'm very tired.

Okay with me, she's your mom.

Luis headed to the car and opened the door. Graham looked back at the jail one more time and got in. Before Luis could start driving Graham said, Let's get out of here!

    Chapter Two

A half-hour later they arrived at Graham's house. They were startled to see a large banner in front saying MURDERER. Graham and Luis got out of the car and tore down the banner. Graham stomped on it and tossed a match onto it. Both men silently watched the flames flare and burn. Luis looked at graham sympathetically. He waited a while until Graham started to enter the house. Then he got back into the car and reluctantly drove away.

    Chapter Three

After watching him drive off, Graham stood in the open doorway, before entering the house. The entire room was in shambles. Sheets of paper and files littered the floor. Graffiti was on the walls. After hunting for a while, pulling everything off the shelves he found the video he had been searching for SAMANTHA and her dance partner. The video had been produced about a year before as a birthday present to her.

He left the living room and went into the kitchen. He opened the refrigerator and grabbed a beer. When he came back into the living room, he put the beer on top of the TV. He plopped himself down on the floor and took the beer from the TV, popped the top, and after three long gulps, tossed the can into the corner. He inserted the video into the player, and turned it on. Samantha danced sensuously with a slender young man. As she moved, she had an anticipatory look about her. She shook her hips enticingly.

After watching for a while, Graham buried his head in his hands, sobbing. The memories were too real. Suddenly, he turned it off and got up. He had made the decision to find out who Samantha's young dance partner was.

    Chapter Four

Meanwhile, Hannah meticulously dusted the formal furniture of her traditional living room. The house was upscale, conservative, abounding in collections of china and porcelain set upon lace doilies, giving the room a cluttered, even claustrophobic feeling. There were framed photos of Graham, his father, and sundry members of the family. In one corner of the room, was a statue of the Madonna beneath which were three candles, two lit, and one, not.

Hannah picked up the photo of her late
