    FOR ONCE IN MY LIFE

    Over thirty years ago, after sitting for two-and-a-half-days with the toughest exam of my life, I became a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). The day I earned that title was the beginning of my professional life with money. Luckily, I hadn’t listened to my father who had warned me, No one will ever hire a woman accountant. Instead I had followed my dream to be a CPA and I began my career working under an innovative, bright, young tax partner with a Big Eight accounting firm who mentored me in tax and financial strategies.

    While my left-brain knowledge and client relational skills continued to mature and develop, I soon grew impatient with the firm and its policies. (Ah, youth!) Following the suggestion of a close client, I left the Big Eight to start my own accounting firm. Fate followed me and a year later, my friend and associate, Janet, agreed to join me to help get my steadily growing workload done.

    As the firm grew, I broadened my knowledge about personal finances and became a Personal Financial Specialist (PFS), the CPA’s version of financial planner. With my financial comprehension expanding, I discovered that the thing I loved most about being a CPA was talking with my clients; numbers were fine, but clients were the real thing. I found that the topic of money and taxes automatically forged a close connection with my clients. This connection is where I found the passion for my work. I loved this soft side of money–helping my clients make financial decisions based on who they were and how they thought. I even had a physician client refer to me as his psycho-accountantnot because I was crazy, but because I helped him with that other side of money.

    When my father died some years later, I embarked on a journey of personal discovery. With the workshops I attended and counselors who helped me, new doors opened to peace and understanding of me and my place in this world. As those doors opened, I began to feel a tug to do something more–something that would make a difference in this world. I used to say to friends and fellow journeyers that there had to be more because I didn’t think St. Peter would greet me at heaven with a pat on the back saying, Good job–you did a really nice tax return! (At least I hoped it was St. Peter who met me!)

    On this personal journey, I searched for fulfillment and a way to make a difference in this world. I began traveling parallel paths–one path expanding my accounting practice, the other expanding me personally. But I couldn’t see any way for these two paths to converge. This time I wasn’t impatient, just frustrated, as only a middle-aged woman can be. So I clung to both paths hoping to find a solution.

    As the years flew by, I saw how my clients were stuck in their financial lives. They sought my advice for making all kinds of decisions, not only the usual ones you might expect, but also advice for major life decisions stymied by money constraints. I pointed out the pros and cons of their choices and instructed them in the mechanics of making necessary changes. And, I noticed the stuck places in their journeys mirrored my stuck places, so occasionally I would sneak in helpful suggestions that I learned on my own personal path.

    At the same time, still searching for that ultimate fulfillment, I tried numerous side ventures: an innovative art program for children, light-hearted productions for television, gatherings for spiritual women, and even Tick Tactic, a Lyme disease first-aid kit. Nothing seemed to work until I said yes to a demanding and time-consuming program right in the middle of my busiest tax season.

    I enrolled in the Empowerment Institute. Working with the methodology developed by Gail Straub and David Gershon over twenty-five years ago, I finally found the tools that brought my two paths together. I developed a Money Empowerment Workshop along with a Money Coaching Program and earned certification as an Empowerment Trainer. The financial programs I developed finally merged my two paths and freed my passion.

    Thus was born The Problem with Money? Having worked with clients for more than thirty years, I knew that managing money was all about making choices. The Empowerment Institute helped me understand that our money choices aren’t worth anything if we haven’t examined the underlying beliefs and values. It’s the beliefs about money that lead us to those choices. Without taking time to uncover those beliefs, we make our choices blindfolded.

    How do I know this? I know from personal experience. One would think that a CPA/financial planner would have her money house in perfect order. After all, I have all the knowledge and talent to make good decisions–right? But left-brain power isn’t the important piece of this puzzle. Just like you, I didn’t know that unexamined beliefs were influencing the choices I made. I had that blindfold on too!

    I remember getting my first job as an accountant at a whopping salary of $11,000 a year. I thought I had died and gone to heaven! Finally, I had some breathing room in my budget. Instead of having friends over for popcorn and beer, I could go out. I could buy a few trinkets, maybe even a new car. Life was good!

    As my income grew, I thought about buying a home. I remember signing the papers on that first house hoping I could afford the $330 a month payment and laughing that it wouldn’t be paid off until 2006. Oh, if only I still had that house and that payment!

    Like others, I bought into the American dream. Bigger house, bigger car, bigger spending plan. In 2006 that mortgage wasn’t
