Although it only felt like it all happened in slow motion, the television cameras that captured it ensured that the world would see it all in slow motion again and again and again.
Dr. Mark Walters could barely believe he was doing this – so the fact that network cameras were immortalizing his act would make sure he never forgot this crazy day was real.
As the stunned crowd looked on, Walters leapt onto the stage, squirmed past the security guards, and dove, fully outstretched toward his target. James Wells’ eyes seemed to pop out of his head when he saw the shaggy-haired scientist flying toward him.

Walters stood in his laboratory, hunched over a spectroradiograph, analyzing his latest set of data. His lab was really just the nine hundred square foot basement of his home, since it was difficult to get funding for his work. He was lucky to have the equipment he had, and the opportunity to work full time on his ongoing project. Some smart investments a few years back had ensured he’d be able to follow his passion without having to worry about putting food on the table.
Not that he’d been eating very well lately. The ebb and flow of his research was reaching one of those crescendos where he felt like he was on the verge of a breakthrough, and
