    Chapter One

    Stafford, Texas, 2010…

Please Kristi, I will do anything, please don’t leave me, Michael fell at her feet and begged her with all the courage he could muster at a moment’s notice. But Kristi was fuming and wouldn’t hear any of his pleadings. She was clearly upset. Michael was the only man she ever loved; the only man she was ever intimate with; the only man she ever opened her heart to; how could he do this to her? Kristi needed answers; she needed to get away from this insanity before she lost her mind for good.

She was on autopilot with only one thing on her mind — get away — and nothing Michael said or did could stop her from her distant destination. It was her first heartbreak from the man she was hoping to spend her golden years with. She didn’t believe in dating half the boys in her high school class before zeroing in on just one guy — for her, Michael was ‘the one’ and now this shocking revelation has toppled the castle she had envisaged for the two of them!

Kristi put her bags into the back of her Mazda Miata, jumped in, and took off like a bat out of hell. As her car swiftly pulled away from the driveway and headed on to Texas Parkway in front of their subdivision in Missouri City, she was greeted by none other than her neighborhood cop — Officer Debra Champagne — who made it her business to patrol the subdivision and watch out for miscreants that wandered the area without any regard for regular commuters. Reports of black teenagers roaming the streets looking for trouble had been reported to the substation where Debra was attached to, for the past several years.

As the patrol car turned on the familiar lights, Kristi knew that in her hurry, she had forgotten to check — of all things — her speedometer. The posted speed limit was thirty-five miles per hour on a small stretch of road between Adams Road and South Main street next to the Holy Family Catholic Church; Kristi knew that she must have been doing at least ten miles over the posted limit in her rush to get away from it all. With all this technology, do I still have to keep an eye on the speedometer, and watch out for cops at the same time?

As Kristi waited for the inevitable, she heard the ‘thud’ of the officer’s car door slamming. As she approached, Kristi lowered her windows and waited. License and Registration, please, the officer asked a bumbling Kristi, who appeared distraught and shaken. She brusquely searched for her papers in the glove compartment.

Is there some reason you’re going in such a hurry, miss?

I’m sorry, Officer; I just started my period and I wanted to get to the Walgreens around the corner, before I bloodied my car seat, she pointed ahead and continued, The one on Gessner Road. The Officer took a good look at Kristi’s face and realized that the poor girl had been crying and she looked more like a ghost out of hell — PMS and all rolled into one tight Kristi. In fact, it looked more like the poor girl’s water just broke; but Kristi was pretty like a flower and didn’t look pregnant at all, except her demeanor. The kind of look she exhibited was more like — either she just killed somebody or she is about to have a baby at any second now!

After a brief respite, the officer advised her, If you show me any signs of bleeding, I’ll let you go with just a warning. As Kristi started wriggling in her car seat wondering how to respond to Officer Debra’s proposition, the Officer thought better of it and added, Never mind; go on ahead and get your pads. I’m not going to keep you waiting. The officer had a feeling that Kristi might not have been wearing any underwear at all. Some young women these days considered panties as luxury items — who needs them, except those Victoria Secret Models prancing around in their lovely underwear!

Thank you Officer, said Kristi, rolled up her windows and cautiously drove towards the neighborhood Walgreens. If the officer happened to continue following her, she was going to stop there, buy some pads, and disappear into the restroom for a quick change. After all, the inconvenience was worth the trouble, saving her the trouble of writing a rather big check to the city coffers. But as Kristi’s car approached the medical shop, the patrol car took a U-turn and went the other way looking for unsuspecting speeders. A very relieved Kristi proceeded ahead. Wow that was a close call. The last thing I need is a speeding ticket from a rotten cop!

Once Kristi was safely behind her steering wheel, she took a right on Craven, and proceeded to take a left on South Main Street. As Kristi’s car was leaving the outskirts of Missouri City and cruising towards Houston, a deafening noise emanated from the upstairs bedroom of the couple’s soon to be past residence. Kristi would learn later that Michael had shot himself in the head with the gun that was kept in the master bedroom loaded and ready to confront night-time intruders in their tracts.

Kristi had forgotten all about the semi-automatic handgun and how Michael had suddenly gone overboard with desperation, blowing out his brains at the thought of losing his only true love. As far as Michael was concerned, live with Kristi or die was his life’s motto. He didn’t think life was worth living without her at his side. He believed in soulmates, and deep down in his heart he knew that Kristi was his soulmate — she was one of a kind, a keeper, someone to cherish till eternity!

Michael was a modern-day Casanova; his love for Kristi was pure, unadulterated, with an angelic beauty to it. He would rather put her on a pedestal and light candles around her to show his appreciation for her. She was his goddess and he wanted to worship her every waking moment of his life. Love like that one could only dream of. Kristi was too shallow to realize the depth of his passion for her. If she had thought deep and hard, she would have come to her senses and taken him back with plenty of apologies. The problem was that she was no angel; she was indeed human with all the weaknesses that came along with it. She was not the kind of lover who would welcome other beauties into her home, just to make her man happy or shock him on his birthdays with, Honey, I got a surprise for you!

Michael would be like, A belly dancer inside a birthday cake? Oh, Kristi, please tell me you didn’t!

Kristi would do anything for her man, including taking a bullet for him. But sharing him with another woman was not something Kristi was willing to put up with. So her love had built-in limitations, based on sexuality. Michael had argued with her once, I love Jesus; that doesn’t mean I’m going to have sex with him. I only love you Kristi; can’t you see that?

After the altercation with Michael, Kristi knew that she was on her own now. She had thought that her hunt for a soulmate was over by now, but all the hard work she had put in, building up their relationship — one act of kindness after another — had all gone down the drain with just one philandering act by none other than her beloved, the one she had fallen head over heels in love with. It was all a mirage! She was hoping to settle down with her heartthrob — Michael, but she knew now, that it’s never going to happen, not in this lifetime. She had prepared herself for all kinds of emergencies, but this one was not one of them. A cheating husband was the last thing on her list of eventualities. How does one prepare for something like that; she had no clue!

Her love-life had suddenly taken an abrupt turn for the worse, falling apart at its seams. She resolutely believed that if Michael truly loved her, then he wouldn’t cheat on her. Little did Kristi know that a lot of men thought with their balls when pretty women came knocking, and threw themselves at them without a second thought, much like getting surprised by a stranger in the bedroom, who happened to accompany one from a neighborhood bar. Sometimes men think, I want to take the pressure off the wife by doing this for her; with the baby and all, the poor thing has no time for good tumble in the sack!

The only way Kristi could go on now, was to get away, and that’s exactly what she did; she looked ahead and stepped on the gas pedal with a renewed vengeance. There was no looking back, not now, never in this lifetime. She saw the trees on either side of the South Main Street whizzing past her as she cruised ahead to nowhere in particular. She hadn’t thought that much ahead in her time of grief. All she wanted to do was leave; and leave she did!

    Chapter Two

Kristi was born and brought up in Turkey, Texas in the United States. The settlement was established in the 1890’s when the first settlers moved in and found flocks of wild turkeys roosting there. Soon thereafter, the settlement at Turkey Roost was developed. Between farming the largely fertile soil and hunting the abundant wild game, including an abundance of turkey, large numbers of deer and buffalo, life was filled with feasting for the new inhabitants, who found themselves getting attached to the bounty of the place. The name Turkey Roost was later shortened to just Turkey, when the first post office was established in the town in 1893.

President Mirabeau B. Lamar, who took office as President of the Republic of Texas at the end of 1838, had a very hostile attitude towards Indian tribes in the area and his only solution to the frequent violent clashes between whites and the native Indians was to rid Texas of the Indians for good. He deployed about nine hundred army regulars to Turkey, thereby defeating the Indians and burning the Indian villages before chasing them across the Red River into neighboring Indian Territory in present day Oklahoma.

Kristi’s education in Turkey began and ended in the only school in Turkey — Valley School, that served grades pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade, in the Turkey-Quitaque Independent School District. While Kristi was a senior at the school, it had received a great schools rating of seven out of ten, based on its overall performance.

When Kristi joined the University of Houston to do a graduate program in education, and fell madly in love with Michael, it was just providence for her. The two things people of Turkey firmly believed in were God and turkey! Although they believed in deer and buffalos as well, the pesky birds were their favorite pastime as well as food. Hunting them provided them with the great amusement they so badly needed, while eating them provided them with the feast that naturally followed any kind of entertainment. All the wooded areas in their settlement were full of turkeys and a careful examination of the trees would reveal the abundance of the bird’s nests.

Turkeys love to sit in the trees and one easy way to locate them is to look for leaf droppings under trees as they love to scratch and drop leaf particles all over the place, making them an easy target for humans. They also like to eat at various times throughout the day. Monitoring the turkeys by hiding in the bushes was Kristi’s favorite pastime. Being the older child, her education about the ‘birds and the bees’ actually came from watching the wild birds in action. Her little sister Lisa was too young to accompany Kristi into the wild chasing turkeys!

Mating season for the wild turkeys was the favorite season for Kristi too, which usually happened around springtime. Every morning during mating season, just before sunrise, the male turkeys would start loudly gobbling to attract the females in the area. It was a real noisy spectacle to watch and Kristi would hide out as she didn’t want to miss any of the action.

The male gobbling could be heard miles away. Once the females come around, the males fan out their tail feathers and raise their body feathers while they dance around, enticing the females. Their dancing display is meant to lure the females to mate with them. Turkeys are polygamous like chicken, and the female lowers herself in front of the male that she desires to mate with, in an act of submission. More like, My lord, please mount me!

Kristi found that it was easy to trap them by watching their feeding patterns. Gobbling starts before sunrise and could continue throughout most of the morning. By hiding behind a tree and surprising them was the best way to bag a turkey. She also found that stealing turkey eggs would make the hen lay more eggs continuously for about three months. But leaving the eggs in the nest would cause the female to sit on them as
