    Introduction

The word Rosary comes from the Latin word ‘Rosarium’, meaning Rose Garden or Garland of Roses.

It is an extremely popular traditional Catholic prayer which is in fact a series of individual prayers repeated in a specific sequence. The rosary also refers to an object known as prayer beads.

Rosary prayer beads are used to help pray the rosary and count the series of prayers or meditation, they are often arranged to look like a necklace, although they should never be worn as one.

The beads are grouped into five sets of ten individual beads better known as ‘Decades’, a larger bead separates each set. There is also a small medallion displaying the Virgin Mary's picture and a separate smaller string which consists of a single bead, followed by three beads and finally another single bead at the end of the rosary from which a crucifix is suspended.

The Rosary prayer is divided into five decades and completion of the five decades represents a mystery or event in the life of Jesus. There are four groups of Rosary Mysteries and these are known as: Joyful, Glorious, Sorrowful and Luminous. Each group of mysteries contain five individual mysteries which are said on different days of the week or times of the church year.

Until 2002 there were fifteen standard Rosary Mysteries which were set by Pope St. Pius V in the 16th century. The fifteen mysteries were grouped into three sets:

    - Joyful

    - Sorrowful

    - Glorious

Pope John Paul II announced five new mysteries, known as the luminous mysteries in 2002,
