Men and women who are highly trained in computer software for the office and communications use these skills to keep an executive-level business office running smoothly and effectively.
In the world of business, the terms administrative
and executive
assistant are used interchangeably to describe a position in which the careerist performs a variety of complex, responsible and confidential secretarial and administrative tasks. While these duties generally include a core set of skills and abilities, the actual job descriptions vary somewhat, depending on the nature of the business being carried out. Regardless of the assignment, or whether their title is administrative/executive assistant, these individuals are working at careers with variety. Top-notch careerists also find opportunities for advancement and financial reward.
Is This Career for You?
With as little as two years of training beyond high school, you could start on a career path leading to the position of administrative assistant or executive assistant. Informally referred to as the employer's right hand,
these individuals work in the world of business, education, and government, among other fields. The pace is often quick and rewards are satisfying. Types of organizations which employ administrative/executive assistants include business, finance, law, education, government, healthcare, broadcasting, construction, scientific research and even the entertainment industry. Their duties are determined directly by the company executive to whom they report. This may be the president or CEO (chief executive officer).
Asked about the rewards of their job, one executive assistant in state government responded, It's fascinating work. You get to be part of the decision-making process, and there is constant variety.
On a daily basis, assignments may involve word processing of reports and memos, maintaining files on computer or paper, and handling inquiries, which come to the office. These invaluable employees may also carry out directives that reorganize or streamline office or department procedures, with the intent of making operations more efficient.
My greatest challenge is to save my employer's time. The goal is to make the boss appear to be as efficient and effective as possible,
one careerist explained.
They may organize and direct company programs, including staff training. The task of compiling department budgets and reports, including annual reports, may be within the scope of their duties. Depending on the nature of the business, there may also be desktop publishing or presentation assignments. The administrative/executive assistant may coordinate the preparation, production
