    Introduction

Embroiled in a custody battle that forced me to spend hours driving to court and other legal proceedings, I saw myself falling down a slippery slope of depression. My frustration grew as I watched a huge chunk of my income go into the gas tank of my van and into the refrigerators of friends who allowed me to crash at their place for the seemingly endless court dates.

Finally I had to acknowledge the futility of my actions. I was exhausted, stressed and quickly becoming financially challenged as gas prices went even higher. I decided to move back to the town that contained my past.

Rather than cry and scream at the injustice or deal with the fact that I would have to pay to haul my stuff, store it and then haul it again when I secured a place I made the choice to leave almost all of it behind. I gave the mobile home and possessions to a lady who had been homeless for a while, packed up what would fit in my van and drove away.

It occurred to me that my personal experience may help others who are starting out or, for whatever reason, have started over; by learning what you will need to just get started you will be freed from being overwhelmed and trying to remember everything at once.

This book may also help those who are planning to relocate to another area; by knowing the basics of what to keep you can be spared from making costly mistakes. I have learned a lot from this experience and it is my hope that sharing this knowledge will help others dealing with what can be an overwhelming situation.

This book was written from the viewpoint of someone who has started over on a shoestring but can be easily applied to someone just starting out. College, first apartment, relocation--there isn't any real difference because you will still need the basics to attain a level of comfort.
