Chapter 1
A new home for Diesel
A young boy and a dog were running and playing in the cool shade. They were just beyond the creek, which on this day had no water flowing in it. Jubilant laughter and whimsical barking pierced the sultry afternoon air.
Jack’s nephew Steven is standing on top of the tire swing.
Jack had made the swing from an old rubber tire. He hung it from one of the sturdy limbs of the enormous oak tree where Steven and Diesel were playing.
The tremendous bough spanned the narrow creek, and the remainder of the branches provided shade for the secluded play area.
Diesel, Jack’s dog, was barking and growling.
Diesel raced in circles, jumping, and trying to get to Steven.
Steven and Diesel were in their own little world, unaware of anything else going on around them. Those two rambunctious youngsters were having quite a good time.
Diesel barked and Steven laughed and taunted him.
Steven smiled at Diesel and said teasingly, Get me boy! Come on, jump!
Barking and growling, Diesel bit onto the rope hanging from the bottom of the tire. He held the rope tightly in his mouth and pulled, backing up, farther and farther.
Diesel growled, shook his head, and suddenly lost his grip.
Steven squealed with delight when the swing rushed back, swirling, twisting, and spinning.
Steven sat down on top of the tire with the rope between his legs. He laughed again and coaxed Diesel with his hand. Get it Diesel. Get the rope!
Diesel grabbed the dangling rope and began pulling the swing backwards again.
Steven’s Dad was sitting on the near side of the creek. He was watching Steven and Diesel playing, captivated by their relentless frolicking.
Uncle Jack walked over and pulled up a chair.
Hello Mike.
Mike looked up, silently grinned, and continued to watch Steven.
Uncle Jack sat down and joined in the fun. Watching Steven and Diesel had become a daily delight.
Jack said, Those two are non-stop balls of energy.
Mike just smiled and nodded.
Jack shook his head and smirked when Diesel jumped halfway through the tire; his head hanging out one side and his butt the other. Diesel’s paws dangled; they were just off the ground.
Diesel wagged his tail and barked until Steven paid attention and swung him back and forth.
Jack smiled and spoke, not muttering, but loud enough Mike could hear. Those two sure do like each other, don’t they?
Mike answered with amazement; This is the most fun I’ve seen Steven have since we took him to the theme park. These past two weeks sure have gone by quickly. It’s too bad we have to leave for home tomorrow. Steven sure is going to miss Diesel.
Jack nodded. Yes, he sure will, and Diesel will miss Steven too.
Jack paused for a moment in thought.
He finally broke the silence. I’ve been watching those two. Everywhere Steven is, Diesel is. Whatever Steven does, Diesel does.
Last night, I was lying in bed, stewing about how much Steven is going to miss Diesel.
Jack leaned forward, rested his elbow on his knee, and put his head on his palm.
He paused again and asked, How about if I let Steven have Diesel? He can keep Diesel and take him home.
Mike tilted his head towards Jack, not sure if he heard him correctly.
Jack nodded and explained, Diesel is a darn good dog. He absolutely loves kids, and it’s obvious he loves Steven.
Oh no, Mike said, I couldn’t take your dog! You must be pretty fond of him by now?
Jack argued, Look, Diesel loves kids and I am sure Steven would love to have Diesel around all the time.
Jack pointed with his head in the direction of Steven and Diesel. Look at them. They are real buddies.
Jack folded his hands together, leaned forward, and rested his forearms on his knees. I am almost certain Diesel would be much happier being with Steven. To tell you the truth, I’d feel better too, knowing Diesel is playing with someone.
Jack rose back up and pointed toward Diesel’s kennel.
Around here, he just barks all day at the squirrels and waits for his daily walks. It would be good for both Steven AND Diesel!
Mike thought for a minute.
He leaned back in his chair and put his hands behind his head. He looked at Jack, raised his eyebrows, gave a narrow grin, and said, We do have a nice big back yard. And it’s already fenced in.
Jack agreed, Yes, and Diesel could run freely for a change.
Mike added, And it might be good to have a dog around at night.
Mike sighed and shook his head. Boy, I’m just not sure.
Mike rested his chin on his hand, grimaced, and stared at the ground. He contemplated for a moment.
In a meek voice, Mike said, I wonder if there would even be room in the car for Diesel. It would be a long way to ride without room to sit. Coming here, Steven had to sit in one little spot. He had to have been very uncomfortable. Steven didn’t complain, but having Diesel back there with him too, might make it even worse.
There was another long silence.
Jack bent forward and tapped Mike’s leg with the back of his hand. Mike quickly looked down at his leg and back at Jack again.
Jack held up a finger, shut one eye, and said, I may have a cure for this dilemma.
He stood up and motioned to Mike to follow him. Let’s go out to the barn. I seem to remember buying a roof mount luggage rack for my car. It should still be out there somewhere. It’s probably up in the trusses.
I have my van, so I won’t need the rack anymore. It’s just sitting out there collecting dust. It’ll hold quite a bit, and it’s weatherproof. Most of your things will fit in it, leaving plenty of room for Old Doofus in the back seat.
Mike laughed, Doofus?
Jack chuckled, Yeah, Diesel acts goofy sometimes, and when he does, I call him Doofus. You’ll get a kick out of some of the shenanigans he pulls.
They went to the barn, moved some things around, and found the luggage rack. Other than a year or two of dust, it seemed to be in good shape.
Jack said, There you go. Now you can take Diesel home and make Steven a very happy little boy. And I’ll be happier knowing Diesel will be having more fun.
Mike nodded happily. By golly, I believe we found the answer.
Mike shook Jack’s hand and said, Yes, I will gladly take Diesel home with us. Steven will be so thrilled.
Mike reached into his hip pocket to get his wallet. How much do I owe you for the rack?
Jack grabbed Mike’s arm to stop him. No charge, you can have the rack. If there’s no room to store it when you get back home, maybe you could sell it.
Jack quickly tugged Mike’s shirtsleeve and bent down to pick up one end of the rack. Let’s go tell Steven the good news!
Mike smiled and helped with his end of the rack.
They carried the dusty rack outside and set it on the stone drive. It definitely needed to be hosed off.
Steven noticed Uncle Jack and his Dad carrying the rack.
Being curious, he and Diesel went over to investigate.
What’s this?
Mike heard Steven, but did not answer him.
Mike grinned at Steven and bent down. With his hands on his knees, Mike said, You know, Steven, we’ll have to head for home tomorrow.
Steven leaned down and hugged Diesel. He looked at his dad and said woefully, I know. I will miss Diesel so much. He is my best friend in the whole world!
Diesel licked Steven’s face, wagged his tail, and pushed his head against Steven’s chest. The unexpected nudge knocked Steven over.
Diesel wagged his tail again and ran in a small circle; seeming to say, Tag, you’re it!
Steven frowned at Diesel, looked at his Dad again, and asked, Can we stay a little longer?
A small tear streamed from his eye as he looked at his Dad, hoping for the best.
Steven’s dad sympathized, I’d love to stay longer, but I have to be back to my office on Monday. We have to leave no later than tomorrow morning.
Steven ran over to Diesel and hugged him. He closed his eyes tightly and began to cry.
Mike grinned and nudged Jack with his hand. He urged, Go on Uncle Jack, you can be the one to tell him the good news.
Jack walked over, held Steven’s arms, and gently stood him up.
Jack knelt down to be face to face with Steven.
Jack smiled and wiped away another tear from Steven’s face. You sure do love Diesel don’t you?
Steven sniffled, Yes, and he loves me too.
Jack lovingly hugged Steven and looked back at Mike.
Mike was watching, beaming with joy.
Uncle Jack looked at Steven and asked, I’ll tell you what, how would you like to have Diesel for your very own?
Steven raised his head and his eyes lit up. He quickly wiped his eyes and said, Can I?
Steven looked at his Dad to see if it was okay.
Mike stood motionless, watching Steven’s delight.
Steven sniffled again and looked at Uncle Jack. You’d let Diesel come home with me?
Uncle Jack nodded and patted Steven on the shoulder. Yes, your Dad and I talked it over and we figured out a way to make room for Diesel.
"I agreed to let
