About this ebook

Who will eat Moira first, her husband or the wolves?

The Survivor, a short story by Andre Jute, is an outwrite from his bestselling 1990 novel, IDITAROD a novel of The Greatest Race on Earth. It is 4860 words long.

The author says: "The Survivor" is not a good introduction to "IDITAROD". It was removed from the novel because it wasn't a good fit. Better to view it as a self-standing short story parallel to Iditarod. Also, while "IDITAROD" has an appeal to young adults, "The Survivor" might give them nightmares, which is why it was removed from the original manuscript. Read at your own risk!

The plane crashed as awkwardly as a teenager with too many limbs, crumpling the starboard wing, squashing the cabin under a low-sweeping branch as it slid forward on the loose snow. It would never fly again because it would never be economical to transport the fuselage and good wing to a distant workshop skilled enough to fit a new wing. The engine, electronics and control systems would however be salvaged.

The man in the righthand seat was not a pilot but, like many Alaskans, he had spent much time in light planes. When the pilot told them to put their heads on their knees, he first turned around to ensure that his wife, in the seat behind the pilot, did as she was told. She had a tendency to panic over small things. Not today, thank god. As he turned, he saw the trees rushing towards them. Not many trees, not here on the divide between the taiga and the tundra, but that was little consolation. Even one tree could be fatal. He resisted the temptation to look for the particular tree that would be in their way, folded his arms neatly on his knees, and settled
